However, this is not always possible, especially for low- and very low-income families. The lack of access to engaging and attractive facilities, green space or parks are some of one of the most significant barriers to keep our kids active and in good physical health. Ultimately the well-being of our communities begins with the well-being of children. All kids deserve a childhood filled with the balanced and active play needed to thrive. Kids in the United States are playing less every year than any previous generation. Only one in four adolescents get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity or active play per day. Younger children exercise a little more than teenagers but it is not close to the minimum recommended levels by the CDC and the US DHHS. The lack of physical unstructured activity increasingly keeps kids unhappy and unhealthy while also keeping them from excelling in many other areas, including academics. Overall one in three kids is obese or overweight and one in five kids has a mental illness. Moreover, kids are not developing critical 21st century skills—such as collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, resilience and empathy which are fundamental to lead a successful life as adults. Finally, one other major barrier to a healthy childhood development for low- and very-low income children is toxic stress; something that can be minimize with physical activity. Proposal The Housing Authority of Maricopa County (HAMC) strives to improve the quality of life of families and strengthen communities. The Housing Authority owns and operates 15 housing properties around Maricopa County. Many of the HAMC communities house young families with kids from all ages; from newborns to high schoolers. However, many of these housing developments do not have access to safe, well designed and attractive playgrounds for kids to spend time outside and exercise while playing. Prefabricated playgrounds and their installation is relatively easy but requires significant financial resources that are limited and available for housing maintenance and construction only. 1 The HAMC proposes the purchase and installation of a prefabricated playground for children between the ages of 2 and 12 years. This playground would be installed at the Father Fidelis Housing Community. Father Fidelis is located in the Town of Guadalupe and counts with 48 housing units. Father Fidelis is considered one of our properties with the highest population of both children and teenagers. The installation of a playground will increase access to fun and engaging physical activity, and will provide children the opportunity to better their physical and mental health while allowing them to increase their social and community skills. Property managers in collaboration with executive leadership will develop an evaluation program and will monitor its use and finally will assess the success of this facility. Based on results and usage, the HAMC will continue to seek funding for other housing communities that are populated with young families.
