Re: Maricopa County Education Service Agency AmeriCorp Grant
Dear Mr. Shogren,
We are writing this letter to provide you with a status update regarding Maricopa County Education
Service Agency's AmeriCorps Grant award of $179,866 funds from the Corporation for National and
Community Services sub-granted to 1VICESA from the Governor's Office of Youth, Faith and Family CFDA
No. 94.006.
In October, 2015, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors took action that dissolved MCESA'S
previous program, Transforming Juveniles through Successful Transitions (TJST). The T.IST dissolution
eliminated four positions and significantly changed the duties and responsibilities of the remaining staff. At
the time the Board of Supervisors took action to accept the AmeriCorps grant, DST was still an active
program with two regional coordinators and mentors intended to provide in-kind services to fulfill the
programming and match requirements.
As a result of the Board change in programming, the structure and logic model deliverables of MCESA's
AmeriCorps grant proposal do not fully align to recent program changes for supporting youth. MCESA's key
activities of the AmeriCorps grant include 1) tutoring by AmeriCorps members, 2) rnentoring by TJST staff,
and 3) development of volunteer programs at each school. MCESA would only be able support the first of the
three key activities above, and at a reduced scale, with its current program staffing and performance measures.
We value ArneriCorp and truly regret being in this position. We bring these changes to your attention at
this time and seek your guidance as to next steps relative to the AmeriCorp grant.
Thank you in advance for your support and consideration.
Sincerely,
Allie Wiener
