On July 30th, 2015 Maricopa County Correctional Heath Services was notified of their selection as
Facility of the Year by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC). The
NCCHC is a national accrediting body for health care delivery in corrections. This award is the

• Sandi Wilson, Assistant County Manager

Tracy Titus, Director of Accreditation at the National Commission, stated it was an honor to
present the award and gave a history of the National Commission on Correctional Health
(NCCHC). She stated that in the 1970s the standards were instituted and there are currently
67 standards that must be achieved in order to receive accreditation. Accreditation is neither
achieved nor maintained without collaboration which is evident within this organization. The
process of accreditation is achieved by keeping rigorous records; preparing and maintaining
staff; and demonstrating excellence. Each year only one facility out of 500 is honored with
the R. Scott Chavez award. Ms. Titus noted Maricopa County was chosen because of the
impressive teamwork between medical, nursing and administrative staff. Three hundred
individuals go through the jail intake process each day and it runs 24 hours a day. She
described the intake process and noted that the survey team is knowledgeable and attentive
staff. Ms. Titus congratulated Maricopa County on the National achievement.

facility it is worthy of the award. He stated there has been an astonishing 15 year facility
transformation and thanked all of the staff.

great in working out transportation of the inmates, are very professional and well trained.

in the past years but has overcome the shortcomings. He stated that the Sheriff’s Office and
health care staff deliver care in the most complex setting and are often the first health care
individuals have received in many years. Supervisor Kunasek said the staff rose to the
challenge to create a stellar program and thanked the Commission for recognizing the County
with the award.

respect for the doctors and nurses who work in a difficult environment. He said there is a lot
