According to U.S. Census figures, over 33% of all adults over 25 years of age in the target geographic area (Central/South Phoenix) served by Friendly House's Youth Services programs have not completed a high school diploma or equivalent. Many students in the target area do not pursue college because their adult parents lack proper education/information, and/or counselors have not provided them with sufficient guidance for navigating the college testing, financial aid, and admissions processes. Since 2002 Friendly House has provided college preparatory assistance to thousands of students to help them navigate these processes. Friendly House's proposed project for the 12% SRPMIC grant program will support a parent engagement and education component for the parents of the high-school age youth participating in its college preparatory program. The participants will include: 150 high-school age students from Central/South Phoenix and 50 adults without college degrees who are their parents/legal guardians. The students will be low-income "first generation" students, meaning they would be the first in their families to attend and graduate from college. The program will offer 14 workshops for the students and their parents to assist with navigating and completing the college testing, financial aid, and admissions processes. Beginning Date of Project: January 1, 2016 End Date of Project: December 31, 2016 Geographic Area to be served: Central/South Phoenix ** Attach Detailed Budget** Amount of Total Project: $330,000 Amount of 12% Request: $100,000 (No Multi-Year Request will be accepted) if the Amount of funding received is less than the amount needed for the project, do you have other funds to complete the project? (Please Explain): Since 2002, Friendly House has received federal funding for its TRi0 Educational Talent Search program ($230,000 annually) to serve 550 youth/students in Grades 6-12 in Central/South Phoenix yearly to become familiar with the college experience. However, all of these federal funds must be spent directly on the students and not for the parental education components which Friendly House also deems important for overall program success. Friendly House applies for and receives small corporate and philanthropic grants annually (e.g. Cox Communications, Desert Schools Federal Credit Union, National Council of La Raza), ranging between $7,500- $18,000 which help to support the parental education components. Friendly House currently has an SRPMIC 12% grant for $50,000 which is enabling the organization to enhance the type and increase the scope of activities which the program offers to the participating high- school age youth and their parents. Some program highlights/results which demonstrate the impact of the current SRPMIC grant investment to date include: • Grand Canyon University Summer Partnership. Fifteen (15) high school students completed an on- campus "Introduction to Justice Studies" class offered by GCU; students earned four (4) college credits, transferrable to any post-secondary institution. Friendly House leveraged $3,500 of its SRPMIC funds to receive a return of $42,645 (in-kind) from GCU. SRPMIC funds covered instructor salary, student supplies and transportation assistance. GCU's in-kind contribution is calculated as follows: Tuition—$41,220 ($687/credit * 15 students), and E-books = $1,425 ($95 * 15). • College Preparation Activities. SRPMIC's investment has enabled Friendly House to hire two part- time College Preparation Specialists (one year-round, one summer). The organization leveraged SRPMIC funds to implement a summer youth leadership program benefitting 25 incoming high school seniors. These students participated in an 8-week intensive college preparation program (12 hours/week) that also required working civic engagement and service learning projects (e.g. students/young leaders prepared lunch bags for the homeless at St. Vincent De Paul). Twenty-three (23) students participated in an overnight trip/visit to the Northern Arizona University campus in Flagstaff and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott • Parent Engagement (Summer 2015). The SRPMIC grant also is allowing Friendly House to improve parental knowledge in education by developing and delivering a 'Parent University' training which provides parents with the information and tools necessary to successfully navigate the educational system. Friendly House has coordinated two Parent University workshops for 15 parents this summer and received positive feedback from the participants. Workshop topics included: high school transition, importance of grades/GPA, college admissions and availability of financial aid and importance of college entrance exams (e.g. ACT, SAT). Upcoming Activities (August-October 2015) • College Entrance Exam Preparation (ACT Test). SRPMIC funds will enable Friendly House to provide - for the first time - an ACT Test preparation program. The organization has hired a specialist to work with 20 incoming high school seniors to prepare them to take or re-take the ACT test. The new program has great significance to participants since an increase of a few points on the ACT test has tremendous impact on a student's eligibility to apply to certain colleges and universities. Students and test specialists will meet every Saturday morning starting on August 8, 2015. Two ACT test experts will work with all 20 students, concentrating especially in math and science, but also will focus on improving students' weaknesses in any subject area. The program will end in October, when the students take the ACT test, the first time the test takes place during the academic year. This will allow the information and techniques provided from the test preparation to be fresh in the students' minds. This exciting program will allow Friendly House to measure student success and establish a baseline for the new program, whose potential success should lead to being able to expand services to more youth in the near future. This 2015-16 SRPMIC request will allow Friendly House to continue enhancing and growing its important youth education and parental engagement activities during CY2016.
