www.maricopa.gov The Honorable Doug Ducey
Governor of Arizona
1700 W. Washington
Phoenix, AZ 85007
Dear Governor Ducey:
Maricopa County, excluding the City of Phoenix, has been the designated Local Workforce
Investment Area since the inception of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA), Public
Law 15-220. Prior to that date, Maricopa County was the designated Service Delivery Area
under the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA). As a result of these designations, Maricopa
County is responsible for increasing the employment, job retention, and earnings of Maricopa
County residents through activities designed to improve the skill sets of the workforce.
With the implementation of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), Public
Law 113-128, the “Governor shall approve a request for initial designation as a local area
from any area that was designated as a local area for purposes of the Workforce Investment
Act of 1998 for the 2-year period preceding the date of enactment of this Act, performed
successfully and sustained fiscal integrity.” For more than the past two years, Maricopa
County has met or exceeded performance measures and successfully served over 22,000
participants each year. In addition, we have not had any WIA financial audit findings and
have been fiscally responsible for WIA program expenditures. Therefore, Maricopa County
respectfully requests designation as the Local Workforce Development Area under WIOA.
Maricopa County continues to explore ways to improve the economic stability of the region
by working with public and private partners to meet the needs of local employers and provide
training in growing industry sectors. We look forward to the opportunity to work with the
Governor’s Office, Department of Economic Security, and the Workforce Arizona Council to
ensure successful planning and implementation of WIOA. We appreciate your support of our
efforts and partnership.
Sincerely,
Steve Chucri
Chair, Maricopa County Board of Supervisors
