According to U.S. Census figures, over 33% of all adults over 25 years of age in the target geographic area (Central/South Phoenix) served by Friendly House's Youth Services programs have not completed a high school diploma or equivalent. Many students in the target area do not pursue college because their adult parents lack proper education/information, and/or counselors have not provided them with sufficient guidance, for navigating the college testing, financial aid, and admissions processes. Since 2002, Friendly House has assisted hundreds of students with navigating these processes. Friendly House's proposed project for the 12% SRPMIC grant program will be directed at increasing parental involvement in the educational activities of their high-school age youth. The participants will include: 150 high school age students from Central/South Phoenix and 50 adults without college degrees who are their parents/legal guardians. The students will be low-income "first generation" students, meaning they would be the first in their families to attend and graduate from college. The program will offer 14 workshops for the students and their parents to assist with navigating and completing the college testing, financial aid, and admissions processes. Beginning Date of Project: July 1, 2014 End Date of Project: June 30, 2015 Geographic Area to be served: Central/South Phoenix **Attach Detailed Budget** Amount of Total Project: $345,000 Amount of 12% Request: $100,000 (No Multi-Year Request will be accepted) If the Amount of funding received is less than the amount needed for the project, do you have other funds to complete the project? (Please Explain): Friendly House receives federal funding for its TRi0 Educational Talent Search program ($230,000 annually) which provides services annually to 550 youth/students in Grades 6-12 in Central/South Phoenix to become familiar with the college experience. However, all of these federal funds must be spent directly on the students and not for the parental education components which Friendly House also deems so important for the overall program success. Friendly House has applied for and received small corporate grants (e.g. Cox Communications, Desert Schools Credit Union) of around $10,000 to $15,000 annually which have helped to support the parental education components. The larger amount of 12% grant funding from SRPMIC which Friendly House might receive would enable the organization to strengthen significantly the type and extent of activities which the program could offer to the parents of the participating high school age youth. If you receive SRPMIC 12 61/0 funding, will it be spent (Check One): o Monthly 0 Quarterly X Lump Sum List of SRPMIC 12% funds you have received in the past and a list of other 12 % grants funding you are seeking from other Tribal Governments for the 2013-2014 12% cycle.
