Project Name: American Indian Programs
In 200 words or less, please provide a brief description of the project submitted to the
12% SRPMIC Grant program.
In order to best serve the American Indian population, the Maricopa Community College District has
instituted two programs: an American Indian Outreach Office — an initiative that is aimed at building
and maintaining community and tribal partnerships; and the American Indian Institute which maintains
a physical presence at both Scottsdale and Mesa Community Colleges and provides American Indian
students with programs and services.
Housed in the District's Administrative Offices, the Outreach Office was created to increase the number
of American Indian students enrolling in college and support their studies toward completion. This office
builds community and tribal partnerships that support not only the students but also their families.
Providing programs and services designed to introduce middle and high school American Indian students
to the college experience as well as retaining currently enrolled students is this Office's goal.
The American Indian Institute maintains a physical presence at both Scottsdale and Mesa Community
Colleges. The mission of the Institute is to provide comprehensive, culturally responsive academic and
personal support that promotes opportunities for successful and enhanced college experiences for
American Indian students. The Institute utilizes the family community model to provide a sense of
familial support for American Indian students that engage students and empowers them as leaders.
