PARTICIPATE IN UNPAID INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS WITH PARTICIPATING LAW SCHOOLS
Authorize the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office (MCAO) to participate in an Internship
Program with participating law schools, including Arizona State University College of Law;
Arizona Summit Law School; Brigham Young University; Albany Law School. With this agenda
item, the Board of Supervisors is approving, in substantial form, contract templates to be
executed by MCAO’s Bureau Chief over Training and Development. MCAO, if approved for this
action, will be authorized to have “Interns” assigned from the above listed law schools and to
execute all necessary individual contracts through May 7, 2017. At that time, continued Board
approval of the Program may be requested. No compensation will be provided by Maricopa
County to the Interns. In providing services to MCAO, the Interns shall be deemed to be
volunteers of the Office.
Experienced attorneys employed by MCAO will serve as the supervisors and mentors for Interns
provided by the above listed law schools. All services to be provided by the Interns shall be
performed under the direct supervision, direction, and control of a supervising attorney.
Suitable office space and administrative and other support services will be provided by the
Office for the Interns. The Interns shall be subject to all of MCAO’s policies, procedures, and
practices except as provided with respect to compensation and benefits or as otherwise
determined by MCAO. Maricopa County shall cover the Interns and the services provided by
the Interns under any applicable risk insurance policies on the same basis as a volunteer of
Maricopa County.
Approval of this agenda item will serve as Board authorization and acceptance of individual
internship agreements entered into under the established Internship Program through May 7,
2017. Individual agreements between the participating law schools and MCAO may allow for
extensions or renewals. Approval of this agenda item will further serve as Board authorization
and acceptance of the provisions of the agreements extended or renewed through May 7,
2017. There are no notable costs associated with the Internship Program; therefore, there is no
need for recovery of indirect costs.
