Teens, between the ages of 12 and 17 years of age, participated in this self-paced, self-directed program. Participants benefited from the MCLE experience by learning more about the county’s role in making services and programs available to the community and the career opportunities it provides. Program experiences highlighted government functions, environmental stewardship, community responsibility and the benefits of volunteerism. (C-22-14-004-P-00) Dr. Silva explained that the County Leadership Program was started four years ago as a way to provide youth with an education about what counties do and how this differs from what cities do and what the state does. He said that although the County is always visible in the community it isn’t always clear to the public what kind of work the County does. In this program participants can view job opportunities with the County and see the duties and accomplishments of 20 different government agencies. Dawn Zimmer gave a brief overview of the program and the part that County agencies play each year in letting 140+ teenagers, 12 to 17 years of age, get a hands-on experience in government, community, environment, volunteerism and work situations as they volunteer a Informal Meeting Minutes Monday, August 05, 2013 Page 2 of 3 minimum of 10 hours in different agency activities, such as, County Shelter Library Teen Tech Labs; park cleanup and beautification; park advocacy; career center volunteering; and volunteering at the Head Start Educational Office. This helps to expose them to ideas of what they may want to do when they enter the workforce. She said the program is designed to fit into the ECAP (Education and Career Actions Plan) Scholarship Application Program and students can use this experience as part of their application. Ms. Zimmer introduced Reba Hagen and asked her to describe her experiences this summer at Teen Leadership. Ms. Hagen said her favorite activity was the Fish Program which is in the Government Section and explained that she had gotten a lot of new information regarding County services. She also enjoyed touring the Diamondback Stadium and learning about the different kinds of jobs that are available there. She learned there is a tire behind the dugout for the players to punch when they are angry regarding an at-bat experience. She said the job training and resume preparation was “cool” and helpful. In addition, she had volunteered at Animal Care and Control and explained that animals need a lot of different kinds of care that she had not been aware of. Tyler Williams said the program is about activities and organization and provides teenagers with opportunities to learn about how County government works. Supervisor Kunasek asked Ms. Zimmer how they reach out to youth to attract them to take part in the program Ms. Zimmer replied that flyers are distributed in schools at the end of the school year through the youth program that the Human Services Department manages, and that the kids who attended connect with other kids on the web about when the program will be repeated. She hoped social media will become involved next year. The Summer Reading Program is now part of the leadership experience. It also involves reading and reporting on eight books. Ms. Zimmer said this program also has a great involvement from teens who get to work in the libraries as well as read age-appropriate books. Supervisor Wilcox said the County has sponsored this program for four years and the Board has seen a positive evolvement in setting up the different learning experiences. She wondered about doing some tracking to learn if any of the students who attended may come to work for the County in the future. Ms. Zimmer said the question could be included in future documentation.
