Jefferson St., Phoenix, AZ 85004, with the following members present: Fulton Brock, Vice Chairman, District 1; Don Stapley, District 2; Max Wilson, District 4; Mary Rose Wilcox, District 5. Absent: Andrew Kunasek, Chairman, District 3. Also present: Michelle Smith, Minutes’ Clerk; and David Benton, Legal Counsel. Minutes compiled by Shirley Million, Minutes Coordinator. 1. DEDICATION OF THE APS SOLAR PAVILION AT CHASE FIELD Greg Schulte, Master of Ceremonies, Radio Voice of the Arizona Diamondbacks Derrick Hall, President & CEO, Arizona Diamondbacks Don Brandt, Chairman and CEO, Arizona Public Service Company (APS) Greg Schulte welcomed guests to Chase Field and the New APS Solar Pavilion, saying this structure is a beautiful addition to the ballpark and it is also Arizona’s newest solar power plant. Many entities participated in the effort that was spearheaded by Arizona Public Service (APS), the Diamondbacks and the Maricopa County Stadium District. The huge solar sunshade covers much of the patio area and gates leading into Chase Field and provides shaded relief to those waiting to enter the ballpark. Mr. Schulte said that APS is celebrating its Green Series Event at Chase Field from April 28 to May 1. He explained that Chase Field is under the jurisdiction of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, which also serves as the Stadium District Board of Directors. Diamondback CEO Derrick Hall described the uniqueness of this type of project in a Major League Baseball Park, and said it further distinguishes the D-backs green initiative goals among professional sports teams. The structure covers 17,280 square feet above the plaza area adjacent to ticket windows and entrance doors, and Mr. Hall said it will enhance fan experience during the hot Phoenix summers as they stand in line to enter the park. He noted that the Diamondbacks would take on the Chicago Cubs that night and through the weekend and that APS would host Green Energy education booths around the ballpark. This innovative project will also be displayed to baseball fans from around the world during the All-Star Game to be held at Chase Field Special Meeting Minutes Thursday, April 28, 2011 Page 2 of 5 in July 2011. Don Brandt explained that APS will use this new solar power plant as a working laboratory and a green energy classroom to study new possibilities using urban solar arrays. The roof of the shade structure consists of 336 solar panels that produce 75 kilowatts of solar power. The amount of energy generated in one year is equivalent to fueling stadium lights for 11 games, running the Diamondbacks pool for 5 years, or providing power to 8-10 Phoenix homes. In the future, those driving electric cars to Chase Field will also be able to recharge their vehicles using solar energy generated through the solar panels on the Pavilion’s roof and saved in the battery storage system. The APS Green Series Event will also display the new, 100%-electric Nissan Leaf, and the 2011 Chevy Volt. These will contrast with several APS historic electric vehicles; a 1915 Detroit Electric, a 1960s Renault (the first electric vehicle to drive cross county), and an electric Indianapolis racing car. The green display will showcase sustainable living concepts like renewable energy and energy efficiency. Mr. Brandt said APS is taking action to expand solar and make Arizona the Solar Capital of the World. There are already 500 million solar panels around the state. Mr. Brandt recognized and thanked the Board of Supervisors, the Stadium District Board of Directors and the Arizona Diamondbacks for partnering with APS on this project. Supervisor Wilcox said the Maricopa County Stadium District supports these improvements for the citizens and the children in the community. She noted the boost Chase Field is giving to downtown Phoenix and said she is proud to be a part of turning Arizona “green.” She added that as a member of the Board of Supervisors and the Board of Directors for the Stadium District, she is especially proud of Chase Field – fast becoming a destination hub for downtown activity, and which is located in the District she represents, District 5. Ms. Wilcox explained that the Solar Pavilion project at Chase Field moves Arizona closer to the reality of using the power of the Sun in a smart and economically useful manner. She noted the addition of the largest construction project ever attempted by Maricopa County, the Downtown Court Tower, located just west of Chase Field, and said, “With this and other new developments, downtown Phoenix is becoming a destination and not just a description.” She congratulated all who helped make this possible. Supervisor Stapley expressed his excitement about this new solar project and cited it as an outstanding example of the good that can result from private and public sectors working together. He stated that Maricopa County looks for every opportunity to use solar energy in County facilities and parking structures and thought that this project would show the community what solar power is all about. He explained his belief that solar power provides wise decision-making for the future of the Valley of the Sun and emphasized the importance of using this natural, God-given resource in an intelligent way. Supervisor Stapley discussed Maricopa County’s approach to green government, which is the smart use of solar energy where there is a positive return on the investment. He explained that using solar energy in the County’s 183 buildings was a wise business decision that saves energy costs and taxpayer dollars. He added that once again, Maricopa County is leading the way into new areas that other entities in the nation will emulate. He congratulated everyone on a beautiful job and thanked APS and the Diamondbacks for partnering with the County and District to create the Solar Pavilion. Mr. Schulte thanked everyone for attending the dedication ceremony and called two mascots “Baxter” and “Solar Man” to the stage to flip the giant switch that sent some Special Meeting Minutes Thursday, April 28, 2011 Page 3 of 5 Chase Field solar power to the grid. 2.
