Agenda Item #7A: Staff update on Loma Del Rio, Double Butte Cemetery, and Tempe
Butte
PURPOSE
Parks staff will provide an update on upcoming projects for Double Butte Cemetery, and Tempe
Butte.
BACKGROUND
In November 2024, Tempe voters approved a bond measure that allocated several million
dollars for historic preservation. Those allocations include funding for restoration of Tempe Butte
($500,000) and Lomo del Rio archaeological site in Papago Preserve ($500,000), as well as
restoration of the original “Pioneer” Section of Double Butte Cemetery ($900,000 allocated over
three years).
The City of Tempe Parks Department manages all three sites, each of which is individually
designated in the Tempe Historic Property Register. Parks Manager Alex Cortese will make a
presentation and field the HPC’s questions.
