This program is in response to sanitary overflows that occurred in the past holiday season. The program hopes to benefit residents and the City by limiting sewer interruptions and maintenance cost, protecting the environment, and providing a sustainable way to dispose of a waste product. Program Assessment The City experienced a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) last year around thanksgiving that was caused by the improper disposal and buildup of fats, oils, and grease (FOG) into the sanitary sewer system. The City was required to report this SSO to Arizona Department of Environmental Quality which oversees the protection of the environment. The City plans to remediate the issues through education on the proper disposal of cooking oils and grease and to provide local disposal sites. SSO not only can cause harm to the environment they can also cause disruption of sewer service as well as taking up city resources. Yellow oil disposal stations can encourage residents to properly dispose of used kitchen oils to help lower the cost of maintenance on city sewer lines and wastewater treatment infrastructure. The used oil will be recycled to be used on agricultural feed lots. The ability to reuse a waste product demonstrates the City’s commitment to conservation and sustainability. Program Scope The City of Surprise currently operates a holiday oil collection program. The City has been in contact with those at the City of Surprise and looks to implement a similar program within the City of El Mirage. The City of Surprise currently partners with Baker Commodities Inc. in a no cost contract to provide holiday oil collection. The City will also partner with Baker Commodities Inc. to provide similar collections sites within the City for use of residents. No commercial disposal will be allowed. Timeframe: To encompass the holiday season, generally from November to the following January Oil Collection Locations: Fire Station – 13601 N El Mirage Rd (parking lot) YMCA - 12450 W Cinnabar Ave, El Mirage, AZ 85335 (parking lot) Public Works Department 10355 N 121st Avenue, El Mirage 85335 623-935-6405; Fax 623-935-6184; TDD 623-933-3258 www.cityofelmirage.org Accepted Oils: Used kitchen oils only - Coconut, Corn, Canola, Cottonseed, Olive, Palm, Peanut, Safflower, Sesame, Soybean, Sunflower, and Vegetable (No motor oils will be collected) Contractor Tasks: • Provide collection bins for used holiday cooking oil collection • Provide routine and emergency collection of accumulated cooking oils • Provide proper recycling of cooking oil • Remove oil collection bins at end of holiday season • Provide amount of collected cooking oil at end of season City Tasks: • Provide adequate locations for oil collection bins • Provide containment for protection against spills • Provide directions and instructions for residents • Provide waste disposal for empty containers • Provide education materials and outreach to residents Any questions or concerns should be directed to Derek Castaneda at 623.876.4252.
