The essential duties and Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) designation may vary based on the specific tasks assigned as determined by the City of El Mirage. JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY This class is the second level in a five-level Sworn Fire series devoted to responding to emergency calls to protect life and property, participating in fire prevention and training activities, and maintaining a fire station and equipment. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks will vary over time depending on the City’s needs. • Responds to fire, emergency medical, and rescue calls. • Performs firefighting activities including firefighting, rescue, ventilation, salvage and overhaul. • Operates various equipment and apparatus at fire scenes. • Locates water supply; lays and operates hoses; monitors the pressure on hoses and nozzles; calculates friction loss and establishes fire stream; raises and climbs ladders. • Utilizes equipment such as axes, pike poles, forcible entry tools, rotary blade and chain saws, extrication tools, and smoke ejectors. • Performs life rescue activities by entering, searching for, and removing persons from hazardous situations. • Provides basic life support; if qualified, advanced life support to patients, including CPR and monitoring of vital signs. • Communicates with hospitals to provide emergency care. FIREFIGHTER CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION 2 • Controls transfer of patients to medical facilities. • Participates in training activities to maintain/improve fire suppression/emergency medical skills and physical condition. • Writes incident reports for fire, EMS and other emergency calls. • Answers two-way radio and telephone calls and maintains appropriate logs. • Provides instruction on first aid, CPR or fire prevention to the general public, as assigned. • Conducts fire station tours. • Inspects, cleans, and maintains apparatus, equipment and station daily. • Conducts building inspections for fire hazards. • Makes presentations to school and civic groups to explain fire prevention practices and techniques. • Conducts classes on CPR, fire prevention, fire safety and related topics. • Maintains a current knowledge of streets, hydrant locations by touring existing and new developments. • Performs related work as assigned. KNOWLEDGE • First aid, CPR and other basic emergency medical care techniques and methods; trauma and medical emergency response. • Use and purpose of a variety of specialized equipment, tools, and apparatus used in fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical assistance. • Streets, addresses, and locations throughout the city and the local area geography. • Fire suppression and prevention methods, fire behavior and fire chemistry. • Principles of mechanics and hydraulics. • Location of hydrants or other water sources. • Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices. • Practices for maintaining logs and records. • Report preparation, grammar, punctuation. • Basic math to calculate measurements and perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and percentages. • Presentation and public speaking techniques. SKILLS FIREFIGHTER CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION 3 • Operating fire apparatus and pumps. • Applying basic emergency medical assistance, including CPR and first aid. • Remaining calm under adverse conditions; making sound judgments concerning life and property under pressure. • Wearing Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). • Analyzing fire and emergency situations and adopt effective courses of action. • Effectively and safely operate equipment used by the department. • Using standard broadcasting procedures for an emergency services radio system. • Exercising judgment and make decisions as to appropriate action under pressure in accordance with rules, regulations and policies, • Working cooperatively and courteously with the public. • Calculating measurements and performing addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and percentages. • Maintaining logs and records; preparing reports. • Maintaining morale standards and integrity. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED and successful completion of a NFPA, state or local recognized Firefighter Academy or alternative equivalent, as determined by the Fire Chief; or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience. Must be 18 years of age. Certifications/Licenses: • EMT or Paramedic certification. • Firefighter I/II Certification. • Hazardous Materials-Operations Certification. • Arizona Class D Driver’s License. CONTINUING EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS • Maintain all certifications/licenses required at job entry and within specified timeframe. ADA INFORMATION Type of Work: Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body. Physical Requirements: FIREFIGHTER CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION 4 The following physical activities are essential to the performance of the job: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, running, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions. Work Environment/Conditions: Inside and outside and operating a vehicle. Environmental conditions include frequent exposure to hazardous materials, extreme temperatures, disruptive people, imminent danger or threats, and intense noise.
