Domestic Violence Awareness Month

PROCLAMATION
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
OCTOBER 2025
WHEREAS, domestic violence is a widespread epidemic affecting millions of Americans
every year, regardless of age, gender, economic status, race, religion, nationality, or educational
background; and
WHEREAS, more than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the United States reported
experiencing any sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking victimization by an intimate
partner at some point in their lifetime; and
WHEREAS, Arizona has the fifth-highest domestic violence rate in the United States, with
about 42% of women and 33% of men experiencing intimate partner physical violence, sexual
violence, or stalking; and
WHEREAS, every 44 minutes in Arizona, one or more children witness domestic violence,
contributing to severe negative effects on mental, physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral
health, increased risk of substance use, physical abuse, neglect, and increased likelihood to
become victims or perpetrators of intimate partner violence; and
WHEREAS, ending domestic violence requires the collaboration and leadership of
government agencies, law enforcement, justice systems, public health officials, advocacy groups,
community members, and individuals; and
WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month provides an opportunity to promote
education, prevention, and intervention efforts and support organizations that provide advocacy
efforts, services, and assistance to victims and survivors of intimate partner violence.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Alexis Hermosillo, Mayor of El Mirage, Arizona, do hereby proclaim the
month of October 2025 as  DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH and in recognition of the
importance of this month, the City’s El Mirage Cares program will host a Domestic Violence
Awareness Walk and Resource Fair on October 18th at Gateway Park from 8-11 am, and as such I
encourage all citizens of the City of El Mirage to join the walk, support the efforts of organizations
working to end domestic violence, and commit to fostering safe and healthy relationships in our
community.
