DV Awareness Proclamation

CITY OF EL MIRAGE 
PROCLAMATION 
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH - OCTOBER 2024 
 
WHEREAS domestic violence is an epidemic affecting Americans in all communities, 
regardless of age, gender, economic status, race, religion, nationality, or educational background; 
and  
WHEREAS Arizona has the fifth-highest domestic violence rate in the United States, with 
about 42.6% of women and 33.4% of men experiencing intimate partner physical violence, sexual 
violence, or stalking; and  
WHEREAS more than 52 million women and 49 million men in the United States reported 
experiencing any physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime; and 
WHEREAS over 3 million children will be affected by domestic violence this year, and 
over 10 million children are at risk of witnessing domestic violence each year, contributing to 
devastating effects such as trauma, decreased social, emotional, and cognitive development, 
physical problems, and an increased likelihood of child abuse and substance abuse; and 
WHEREAS domestic Violence Awareness Month provides the opportunity to enhance 
education, prevention, and intervention efforts around domestic violence and support 
organizations that provide advocacy efforts, services, and assistance to victims.  
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Alexis Hermosillo, Mayor of El Mirage, Arizona, on this 1st day 
of October 2024, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2024 as 
 
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH 
 
and in recognition of the importance of this month, the City’s El Mirage Cares program is hosting 
a Walk to End Domestic Violence on October 19th at Gateway Park, and as such I encourage all 
citizens of the City of El Mirage join the Walk and to support the efforts of organizations that 
provide education, outreach, and support to victims of domestic violence and call upon our citizens 
to dedicate themselves to ending all forms of violence and the abuse of power and control in
