Project Title Mental Well-being and You What Audience(s) are you targeting with this CAP grant and why: The Library has observed that since the onset of the pandemic, more and more patrons are looking for books that help with their mental health, regardless of their ages. Adults are looking for materials to help their moods, attitudes and how to deal with everyday life. Teens are looking for books to lose themselves in and identify themselves in the characters in fiction books. This is a phenomenon called bibliotherapy. And finally, parents are looking for books for youth that help children understand the world around them and how to handle various moods. The Library requests funding to further build on the quality and quantity in its selection of books to encourage self-help and catharsis of self. What specific change do you intend to achieve with this CAP grant? Since the pandemic, the library has been become more essential for individuals. Patrons are seeking out materials to help them or their children to cope. Adults and teens may experience isolation and depression due to social distancing and quarantining. “During the time period between 1999 through 2018, suicide rates in the United States increased by 35% from 10.5 per 100,000 in 1999 to 14.2 per 100,000 in 2018” (National Institute of Mental Health Information Resource Center, n.d). The pandemic has exasperated the situation. While the Library does purchase a wide variety of materials, it is necessary to update and increase our mental health collection offerings for the Youth, Teen and Adult collections. Much has been published in the past year and we want to make sure we have all resources available for our patrons. The funding from this grant will allow the Library to purchase new quality materials for the patrons of Glendale. What collection materials does your library plan to provide to achieve your intended outcome? Glendale Library will use grant funding to augment our library collections that meet the community’s need to further personal mental health. The Library will include Spanish language materials. The Library will focus on both fiction and nonfiction materials, including e-Materials, for all age groups. The collection will be housed at the Foothill Branch Library, located at 19055 N. 57th Ave, Glendale, AZ 85308, which is across the street from Midwestern University (a partner). The Library will purchase additional in-kind copies throughout the system. E-Materials will be available for those patrons who cannot physically attend the Library. Describe the programming your library plans to provide to support the collections. The library will focus on books that pertain to mental well-being issues (self-help, suicide prevention, stress reduction, etc.) in conjunction with the Midwestern University community leading health lectures series and/or self-help lectures. The Teen and Youth librarians will create takeaways program kits for self-care and stress-reducing activities or if possible, host in-person programs for the activities. A rotating display of new and existing titles will show case ways to improve one’s mental well-being. Identify the Program director and explain why he or she is appropriate for this project. Elizabeth Garcia has been the Administrative Librarian for the Heroes Regional Park Library since 2019. She holds a PhD in Library and Information Science and researched the librarian’s role in the practice of bibliotherapy. She also oversees system-wide programming for all age ranges. The library currently partners with Midwestern University for the Virtual Community Lecture Series. Midwestern University is located at 19555 N. 59th Ave in Glendale, AZ. According to the website, “Midwestern University is an established leader in healthcare education with an exciting vision for the future.” Midwestern University would continue to provide lectures and focus topics on mental well- being. Provide a brief timeline for planning and implementing your project. A final report is due September 2, 2022. May – August 2021: Upon notification of grant funding from the State, the Library will begin planning programming to tie-in with the grant. September- June 2021: Upon approval from the Glendale City Council, the Library will begin selection and the acquisition of print materials through the next several months. September- July 2021: Virtual (and in person when safe to do so) Lecture series, Grab and Goes for Youth and Take and Makes for Teens will be held at the library system in support of grant-purchased materials. July-August 2021: All monies will be expended, and a final report completed. Please describe how you will use the $4000 allotted for this CAP grant. The $4,000 will go to purchasing adult, teen, and youth material via our primary and secondary vendors with approximately 47.5% going towards Adult material, 40% going toward Youth material, and 12.5% going toward Teen materials.
