ORDINANCE NO. O21-91
AN ORDINANCE OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
GLENDALE, MARICOPA COUNTY, ARIZONA, AMENDING
CHAPTER 25 (NUISANCES) ARTICLE II (SPECIAL ACTS,
OMISSIONS AND CONDITIONS) SECTION 25, BY ADDING
SECTION 25-26 (BEEKEPING) AND SETTING FORTH AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE as follows:
SECTION 1. That the Glendale City Code Chapter 25, Article II, Section 25 is amended
by adding Section 25-26 and shall read as follows:
Chapter 25- Nuisances
Sec. 25-26 Beekeeping
(A) Definitions.
(1) Apiary means one or more hives or colonies of bees at one location.
(2) Colony means the inhabitance of the hive including the queen, drones, worker bees
and brood.
(3) Hive means the domicile of bees including any receptacles or containers inhabited by
bees.
(B)
Keeping of Bees:
(1) It shall be unlawful for any person to keep bees on any lot or parcel of land consisting
of less than six thousand square feet in area.
(2) It shall be unlawful for any person to keep or maintain more than one hive or colony
of bees for each one thousand seven hundred square feet of area within any lot or parcel
of land upon which bees are kept or maintained.
(3) No apiary, hive or colony of bees shall be kept or maintained within fifty feet of any
boundary line of the lot or parcel upon which the bees are kept.
(4) No apiary, hive or colony of bees shall be kept or maintained within two hundred feet
of an existing dwelling located on another lot or parcel.
(5) Any person keeping or maintaining bees within the City shall provide a constant and
easily accessible supply of water of sufficient quantity to meet the needs of all bees being
maintained.

(6) It shall be unlawful for any person to keep or maintain bees in a manner that presents
a hazard to the public health, safety and welfare of residents.
(7) The keeping of bees within the City will require the persons responsible for keeping
the bees to be certified through the City. Certification will include an application and
visual demonstration that the persons keeping bees meet the provisions of this ordinance.
The persons seeking certification will only be certified after the property is inspected for
compliance with this ordinance. The fee for certification is set at $25 and is a one-time
fee.
(8) Once a person is certified to keep bees on any lot or parcel within the City, the owners
of the properties abutting the lot or parcel where bees are being kept will be notified of
the certification by the City.

SECTION 2. That the provisions of this ordinance shall become effective thirty (30)
days after passage of this ordinance by the Glendale City Council.
PASSED, ADOPTED AND APPROVED by the Mayor and Council of the City of
