City of Glendale ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES 5850 West Glendale Avenue Glendale, AZ 85301 May 27, 2021 6:00 PM Zoom Meeting 1. CALL TO ORDER Vice Chair Barber called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Present: Derrell Barber, Vice Chair Jose Aguinaga, Commissioner Chris Kennedy, Commissioner Lorraine Zomok, Commissioner Kaitlyn Whittaker, Commissioner Absent: Nicole Riley, Chair Also Present: Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Arts & Culture Program Manager Samuel Pena, Economic Development Program Manager Joseph Benesh, Arizona Citizens for the Arts, Executive Director 3. PUBLIC COMMENTS There were no public comments. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES ACTION: Arts Commission Minutes of Thursday, April 22, 2021 Motioned by Commissioner Lorraine Zomok, seconded by Commissioner Jose Aguinaga AYE: Vice Chair Derrell Barber Commissioner Jose Aguinaga Commissioner Chris Kennedy Commissioner Lorraine Zomok Commissioner Kaitlyn Whittaker Passed 5. NEW BUSINESS a. INFORMATION: Commission Introductions The commissioners introduced themselves and met the newest member of the Arts Commission, Commissioner Whittaker. b. INFORMATION: Arizona Citizens for the Arts Mr. Benesh gave an overview on the work of Arizona Citizens for the Arts and the importance of arts advocacy. c. ACTION: Thunderbird Field Public Art Mini Project Ms. Vahabzadeh relayed there was an opportunity for the Commission to consider a mini public art project to commemorate Thunderbird Field, a historically significant former military site that was used primarily for flight training of Allied pilots during World War II. She reported the site was currently being developed by a home builder, but there was an opportunity to commission a public art project on a portion of city right-of-way near the southwest corner of 55th Avenue and Acoma Drive. Ms. Vahabzadeh announced she was asking for consensus to fund this project, not to exceed $50,000. She introduced Mr. Pena, of Economic Development, to provide further details. Mr. Pena shared historical details regarding the site and answered commissioner questions. INFORMATION: Panelists for Upcoming Public Art Projects Ms. Vahabzadeh asked Commissioners to announce their interest in sitting on two selection panels. Discussion was facilitated and volunteers noted as follows: Glendale Family Advocacy Center Mural Project: Commissioners Zomok and Whittaker Thunderbird Airfield Project: Vice Chair Barber and Commissioner Kennedy e. ACTION: Summer Commission Break and Date Change for the August Regular Meeting Action: To vacate the June 24, 2021 and July 22, 2021 Regular Arts Commission meetings and to reschedule the regular August Commission meeting for August 18, 2021. STAFF UPDATES Ms. Vahabzadeh announced the City’s Special Events Month of May concerts have been going very well with good attendance. She encouraged all attend the events this final weekend and noted that the painted guitars were on display at the concerts. 7. COMMISSION COMMENTS Commissioner Zomok inquired about the possibility of wrapping utility boxes in downtown in the future. She volunteered to contact the City of Peoria to learn more about their experience through this process. 8. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. 9.
