CALL TO ORDER Chair Riley called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Present: Nicole Riley, Chair Derrell Barber, Vice Chair Jose Aguinaga, Commissioner Chris Kennedy, Commissioner Kaitlyn Whittaker, Commissioner Absent: Lorraine Zomok, Commissioner Also Present: Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Arts & Culture Program Manager 3. PUBLIC COMMENTS There were no public comments. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES a. Motion: Approval of the Arts Commission Minutes of May 27, 2021 Motioned by Commissioner Chris Kennedy, seconded by Vice Chair Derrell Barber AYE: Chair Nicole Riley Vice Chair Derrell Barber Commissioner Jose Aguinaga Commissioner Chris Kennedy Commissioner Kaitlyn Whittaker Other: Commissioner Lorraine Zomok (ABSENT) Passed 5. NEW BUSINESS a. ACTION: Live @ Murphy Park Temporary Art Installation Motion: To approve funding in the amount of $10,000 for a temporary art installation by Kris Kollasch of Fine Art & Creative Environments, LLC for Live! @ Murphy Park Motioned by Commissioner Chris Kennedy, seconded by Commissioner Kaitlyn Whittaker AYE: Chair Nicole Riley Vice Chair Derrell Barber Commissioner Jose Aguinaga Commissioner Chris Kennedy Commissioner Kaitlyn Whittaker Other: Commissioner Lorraine Zomok (ABSENT) Passed b. ACTION: FY 2021-2022 Performing Arts Grants Ms. Vahabzadeh announced the purpose of the agenda item was for the Commissioners to make final selections for the FY2021-2022 Performing Arts Grants. Ms. Vahabzadeh explained that in advance of the meeting, the Commissioners individually reviewed and scored the applications using the Submittable online grant management program. She displayed the scoring results. Discussion was held regarding the applications, criteria, and scoring. Motion: To approve funding the top scoring fifteen FY2021-2022 Performing Arts Grant proposals, which are as follows: Women in Song at the Glendale Main Library 2020-21 Driftwood – Glendale Live @ the Library Partnership DanceAZ School Residency Program at Don Mesendick Luna & Solis PCM at Heritage Foothills Library and Glendale School Performances Japanese Taiko Drumming, Reflections of Culture CAFE Flute Concert Live at the Library VALOR Film and Music Festival An Evening of Contemporary Dance & Film The Story of Our Journey Performance Project Storytelling for Survival Red Rock Crossing Band LIVE in Glendale The Sacred G’s Motioned by Commissioner Chris Kennedy, seconded by Commissioner Jose Aguinaga AYE: Chair Nicole Riley Vice Chair Derrell Barber Commissioner Jose Aguinaga Commissioner Chris Kennedy Commissioner Kaitlyn Whittaker Other: Commissioner Lorraine Zomok (ABSENT) Passed 6. STAFF UPDATES Ms. Vahabzadeh thanked the Commissioners for their patience with meeting virtually and took a poll on whether or not to continue virtually or to begin in-person meetings. It was agreed that the Commission would continue to meet over the next few months via Zoom. Ms. Vahabzadeh reported that Ballet Under the Stars performance will take place on Thursday, September 30th at 7:00 p.m. at Sahuaro Ranch Park. She relayed food trucks will be on site starting at 5:30 p.m. and she will send a promotional flyer with parking information to the Commissioners. Ms. Vahabzadeh announced that, in support of live performing arts in the West Valley, the City of Glendale has a table for six attendees at the opening night of the Arizona Broadway Theatre’s performance of the musical ‘Chicago’ on Saturday, September 18th at 5:00 p.m. She invited the Commissioners to attend with a guest. Chair Riley, Vice Chair Barber, and Commissioner Whittaker replied that they were available to attend. 7. COMMISSION COMMENTS There were no comments. 8. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held on Thursday, September 23 at 6:00 p.m. via Zoom. 9.
