FOOTHILLS LIBRARY UPDATES AND TOUR INFORMATION Chief Librarian Beck welcomes everyone to the Foothills Library, points out the latest technology in the meeting room and introduces Kristin Fletcher-Spear, Administrative Librarian. Administrative Librarian Fletcher-Spear has worked for the Glendale Library for 21 years. The past two years have created many changes due to the pandemic such as shutting down the library, opening the drive-up for holds (30-40 pages of holds per day), opened the Road Runner Room for a walk-through only. About six months ago, the library reopened but two of the service desks have closed and only the centrally located desk is open. In the adult department, they needed additional space and moved all items to the magazine area. We started the in-person programming at the library about six months ago as well. Music is big at the Foothills library and they have many upcoming events. The Book Sale happened earlier in the month. They had over 500 people for the one-day event and raised over $3,000. The next book sale event will be on April 30, 2022. The teen area was reworked with the help of grant funds. In November they will have a camping theme coming up for the teens. The youth area has a Grant based 8-week series which focuses on school readiness, self-control, and communication. Next series will be in January. They rotate with the Velma Teague Library. The toys are not out yet due to the pandemic. In August they had an after-school scavenger hunt. In October it will be a Halloween themed scavenger hunt. Vice Chair Ndavu asked for library times for the teens and the ages. Administrative Librarian Fletch-Spear stated it’s for teens between the ages of 12-18 and will be on Friday it is 6:30-8:30 p.m. Chief Librarian Beck commented to the Board that the tour will begin, and the meeting will continue afterwards. Vice Chair Ndavu asked if there were any questions. No questions. 6. Chief Librarian Update Chief Librarian Beck updated the Board of the following: • November 11 – Annual Veterans day event, flag changing ceremony, will be at the Main Library, approximately starting at 8:30-9:00 a.m. • December 5 (12-5:00 p.m.) – Libcon will be at the Velma Teague Library. There are 20 vendors currently. Most of the event will be outside and is a great family event. Many people dress up as Cosplay characters. • Stand Up for Veterans was on October 9th. The event attracts 1,000’s of people which is a good opportunity for the library booth. • Library Card Registration month was in September. We registered over 1,100 new patrons to the Glendale library system. • Thanks to Council Member Lauren Tolmachoff for donating equipment which is in full use. • Computers have been added in the two study rooms which was a recommendation by Member Harris. 3 7.
