4, APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES

a. Board Member Eva Ndavu made the motion, Board Member Lauren Snair made the
second to approve the December 8, 2021 Library Advisory Board meeting.

5. NEW BUSINESS

a. ANNUAL ARIZONA SONGWRITERS MINI-FEST PROGRAM (Informational)

Chief Librarian Beck stated that this is one of the signature events and introduces lvy
Jarvis, Programming Librarian. Last year we offered a virtual mini-Songwriters program in
lieu of the Songwriters gathering. We offered five virtual lecturers that are recognized
experts in the field. Three of the performances are on the City of Glendale YouTube
channel for future viewing. More than 40 songwriters and published in six, one-hour long
videos on the YouTube channel also. This year we will have the 25th Annual Arizona
Songwriters in-person programming on Saturday, June 29th from 10:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
This is the 13th year that the gathering has been held at the Glendale Library, prior years it
was held at Encanto park in Phoenix. Ron Austin, retired Phoenix Parks & Recs.

member and member of the Folk Music Community partnered with Jon Iger, founder of the
Arizona Songwriters Association, to create the program initially. They are both members
of the committee today. This program is offered by Members of the Association, West
Valley Country Music Association and Folk Music Community. Newest members are Doug
and Barbara Barnett. They offered help and sound support on two stages throughout the
event. The Barnett’s have also purchased two pop-up banners for the event with our new
logo. The guitar logo was created by Meredith Jenson-Benjamin and well received by
everyone. Michael Laskow, CEO and founder of TAXI, world’s leading repertoire company
will record the live event for the library. The event will have many performers for adults
and children. We offer virtual lectures for those that want to view from home. For those
attending in-person, we are limiting the number of guests inside. There are more than 60
performers scheduled throughout the auditorium, large meeting room, lobby, outside and
online as well. There will be also be a food truck, Diner on Wheels, coming in for the
event.

Ms. Jarvis said there will be another program coming, Vision & Sound. This is an African
American experience. A state-wide series of artist exhibits, presentations and events
celebrating Black History Month. It is paid for by the City of Glendale Art Program. On
February 6, from 2:00-3:30 p.m., Jenita Landrum is scheduled. She will showcase her
exhibit “This and That”. Discover how this experimental journey through the art process
allows spectators to reflect on the representation of race, gender, and class in art. On
February 7th from 6:00-7:30 p.m., Jacqueline Chanda is scheduled. She will discuss her
research about the lives and cultures of Appalachian African Americans from South
Central West Virginia.

Member Kukowski asked if the Vision & Sound event is in-person only. Ivy Jarvis,
Librarian, stated that it is only in-person.

Chief Librarian Beck commends lvy Jarvis for her hard work throughout the year obtaining
many programs for the city.

LIBRARY ADAPTIVE NEEDS PROGRAMMING (Informational)

Chief Librarian Beck stated that this is a follow-up regarding a suggestion by Member
Harris. Chief Librarian Beck introduced Liz Garcia, Administrative Librarian, who is our
system-wide programming chair. Ms. Garcia stated that all our programs for children,
teens and adults are open to everyone. Each program is adaptable, and we adjust to
everyone’s needs. We have ADA computers with larger font for those that need it. Ms.
Garcia passes out the current list of the Library Adaptive Programming Partners. The
library has partnership with groups such as AARP (over age 50), Area Agency on Aging
and Benevilla (0-5 years old) to name a few.

Chair Johnson asked if there were any questions.

Chief Librarian Beck stated that our audience is the entire city. We look for innovative and
creative ways to make sure we cover all special needs. Virtual programming did not exist

two years ago pre-covid. Now there are many programs online. We have some staff that
have sign language capabilities, and some staff are bi-lingual as well.

Ms. Garcia stated that on the City of Glendale YouTube channel, Closed Captioning is
available. Some of the hybrid programs like the book discussions are good for this group
also.

Chairman Librarian Beck stated that the buildings are ADA compliant, designated
computers and adjustable tables for wheelchair accessibility. Chairman Librarian Beck
stated that Ms. Garcia is responsible for system-wide programming for a community with a
quarter of a million people.

Chair Johnson asked if there were any questions.

Vice Chair, Tim Ndavu, wanted to know if mental health was being addressed. Ms. Garcia
commented that there is a collection development grant, Mental Well Being in You, in
place. There will be lectures scheduled at the Foothills branch location.

CHIEF LIBRARIAN UPDATE

Chief Librarian Beck updated the Board of the following:

« Summer Reading Program — We participate with Maricopa County and participants have
doubled from 2020.

* Budget Season — The budget looks fine and will have a presentation in May.

¢ Master Planning — The first meeting was last week and will keep the board updated.
Community input will be in February/March. The consultants, Rethinking Libraries, have
won awards and are nationally known.

* Chief Librarian Beck congratulates Chair Johnson and Vice-Chair Ndavu for being re-
elected and the reappointment of board members.

* Heroes Lake opening ceremony on Thursday, January 13th at 2:30 p.m.

« Volunteers Appreciation luncheon was held on December 17th. Some of the volunteers,
such as the Kesslers, have been with the library since 1999. There are approximately
1,000 hours donated each year. We appreciate our volunteers and wanted to recognize
the great work they are doing.

BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS

Member Kukowski said that the Tempe and Mesa library were passing out Covid tests.
Chief Librarian Beck will check on it.

Vice-Chair Ndavu commends the great work regarding the Songwriters event.

Member Eva Ndavu asked if there are plans for electric charging stations. Chief Librarian
Beck will check on it.

Chair Johnson asked if there were any more questions. No other questions.

NEXT MEETING

The next regular meeting of the Library Advisory Board will be held on February 9, 2022 at
6:00 p.m., located at the Heroes Regional Park Library, located at 6075 N. 83rd, Glendale,
Arizona, 85303.

Jenita Landrum, an ASU alumna, professional painter and installation
artist, describes her work as “educational, beautiful and edgy.” “This and
That," her most recent exhibition in the Vault Gallery at ASU's Downtown
Phoenix campus library, uses everything from watercolor to German toilet
paper. Discover how this experimental journey through the art process
allows spectators to reflect on the representation of race, gender and class
in art.

Monday, February 7, 6-7:30 PM, Auditorium

Learn about the lives and cultures of Appalachian African Americans from
South Central West Virginia through the research of Jacqueline Chanda.
After 28 years of teaching and research in art education at several
universities, Dr. Chanda is now a full-time oil painter in her studio in
Tucson, AZ.
