CALL TO ORDER Chair Barber called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Present: Derrell Barber, Chair Lorraine Zomok, Vice Chair Jose Aguinaga, Commissioner Jean Hailey, Commissioner Nancy Lenox, Commissioner Nicole Riley, Commissioner Absent: Kaitlyn Whittaker, Commissioner Also Present: Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Arts & Culture Program Manager 3. PUBLIC COMMENTS There were no comments. 4. ACTION: Approval of the meeting minutes of February 24, 2022 Motioned by Vice Chair Lorraine Zomok, seconded by Commissioner Nancy Lenox AYE: Chair Derrell Barber Vice Chair Lorraine Zomok Commissioner Jose Aguinaga Commissioner Jean Hailey Commissioner Nancy Lenox Commissioner Nicole Riley Passed 5. NEW BUSINESS a. INFORMATION: Commission Introductions Chair Barber introduced Commissioner Hailey, who was newly appointed to the Commission. All present introduced themselves and shared a brief background. b. ACTION: Glendale Family Advocacy Center Mural Design Ms. Vahabzadeh gave an update on the Glendale Family Advocacy Center Mural project, which included the following information: The project is a large 1,500 square foot mural to be painted on the north-facing wall of the building in downtown Glendale There were 18 artist applicants Three finalists were chosen by the Selection Panel: Ms. Lauren Lee Team of Mr. Miguel Angel Godoy and Mr. Edgar Fernandez Team of Mr. Jake Early and Mr. Quinn Murphy Last week, the finalists presented their design proposals to the Selection Panel The decision was difficult as all finalists came up with beautiful and thoughtfully designed artwork Photos of the submissions were presented The selected team was Mr. Miguel Angel Godoy and Mr. Edgar Fernandez with their submission of ‘Rising Together’ Motion: To approve Mr. Miguel Angel Godoy and Mr. Edgar Fernandez with their submission of ‘Rising Together’ as the artist team recommended by the Selection Panel for the Glendale Family Advocacy Center Mural project Motioned by Commissioner Nicole Riley, seconded by Commissioner Jose Aguinaga AYE: Chair Derrell Barber Vice Chair Lorraine Zomok Commissioner Jose Aguinaga Commissioner Jean Hailey Commissioner Nancy Lenox Commissioner Nicole Riley Passed c. ACTION; Ballet Under the Stars 2022 Ms. Vahabzadeh gave an update on Ballet Under the Stars 2022, which included the following details: Ballet Under the Stars takes place in the fall each year and is free to the community at four or five venues in metro Phoenix Last September the event was held at Sahuaro Ranch Park with approximately 1,200 people in attendance Motion: To approve funding in the amount of $10,000 for Ballet Under the Stars at Sahuaro Ranch Park to be held on Friday, September 9, 2022 Motioned by Vice Chair Lorraine Zomok, seconded by Commissioner Nancy Lenox AYE: Chair Derrell Barber Vice Chair Lorraine Zomok Commissioner Jose Aguinaga Commissioner Jean Hailey Commissioner Nancy Lenox Commissioner Nicole Riley Passed 6. STAFF REPORTS Ms. Vahabzadeh made the following announcements: Ms. Tiffany Lippincott was hired as the Arts and Culture Coordinator and will start in this role on April 4th Application process will be opened late in April for the FY22-23 Performing Arts Grants The Plein Air Art Competition was held on March 5th at Sahuaro Ranch Park. Photos of the event were shown and winners were announced as follows: Heritage Award, $1,000 purchase award: Artist Hristi Wilbur 1st Place Award, $1,000: Artist Jef Leber 2nd Place Award, $700: Artist Alex Pekaka 3rd Place Award, $400: Artist Victoria Klotz 7. COMMISSION COMMENTS There were no comments. 8. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held via Zoom or in-person on Thursday, May 26, 2022. 9.
