1 D R A F T MINUTES ARTS COMMISSION ZOOM MEETING August 24, 2023 6:00 P.M. 1. CALL TO ORDER The virtual meeting was called to order by Vice Chair Lenox at 6:04 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Present: Nancy Lenox, Vice Chair José Aguiñaga, Commissioner Derrell Barber, Commissioner Anne Marie Chaney, Commissioner James Smith, Commissioner Absent: Jean Hailey, Commissioner Also Present: Daniel Sabillon, Deputy Director, Economic Development Jessi Pederson, Director, Economic Development 3. PUBLIC COMMENTS No comments were received. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES a. Action: Arts Commission Minutes of Thursday, June 1, 2023 Motion: To approve the Arts Commission minutes of June 1, 2023 as written. Motioned by Commissioner James Smith, second by Commissioner Jean Hailey AYE: Chair Nancy Lenox Commissioner José Aguiñaga Commissioner Derrell Barber Commissioner Anne Marie Chaney Commissioner James Smith Other: Commissioner Jean Hailey (Absent) Passed 5. NEW BUSINESS a. Information: Update on Current Projects Mr. Sabillon gave updates on current projects, which included the following: • The Sierra Verde Park Well Site Art Project at Arrowhead Ranch: o The project is going smoothly. o The artist will install medallions the third or fourth of September. The Commission will be advised once the date is finalized. • Thunderbird Field Public Art Project o The project is on 55th Avenue, north of Acoma and is currently in the permitting process. o Ms. Kristine Kollasch was chosen as the selected artist by the panel. o The project is moving forward, but there may be a slight delay in the installation date. 2 b. Information: Update on the Arts Master Plan Mr. Sabillon gave an update on the Arts Master Plan, which included the following: • The plan has not been updated since 2005. • The Cultural Planning Group (CPG) was selected as the consultant for the plan update. • CPG met with staff, City leadership, and Council. • CPG is in the community engagement phase. • CPG is meeting with the Task Force Members. Vice Chair Lenox is part of the Task Force. • Task Force members are being asked to meet with focus groups for more outreach. • CPG’s second site visit for community engagement will be September 6th through September 8th. c. Information: Art Installations at LiVE! Concert Series Mr. Sabillon gave an update on the LiVE! Concert Series, which included the following: • Due to the Downtown Campus Renovation Project, the amphitheater will be unavailable for concerts. The concert series will be moved to the parking lot next to the Civic Center. • A concert will be held on a Saturday, once a month, and it will have more of a small festival feel. • Operational hours will be 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. with vendors, a bar, lawn games, and potentially live art. Downtown businesses will be open during the same time. • The first date will be September 30th and it will have a Hispanic theme because it is Hispanic Heritage month. d. Action: The FY2023-24 Performing Arts Grants The Commissioners discussed the FY 2023-24 Performing Arts Grants applications and scoring results. Staff facilitated discussion. During the discussions, Ms. Pederson explained that the Commission, if so desired, could grant more than the previously agreed upon $44,000 budget. She said there were some funds in the Arts budget for the Influx art project that would most likely not be utilized this year due to the Downtown Campus Renovation Project. Action: Arts Commission Chair Mr. Sabillon reported that since former Chair Lorraine Zomok resigned from the Commission, a recommendation for a new Chair needed to be made. Consensus was obtained to recommend Vice Chair Nancy Lenox as Chair. Vice Chair Lenox accepted. Consensus was obtained to recommend Commissioner James Smith as Vice Chair. Commissioner Smith accepted. Ms. Pederson explained that the recommendations will be sent to the Government Services Committee and Mr. Sabillon will keep the Commission updated on approval. 6. STAFF REPORTS Ms. Pederson thanked the Commissioners for their participation at the meeting. Mr. Sabillon thanked the Commissioners for their patience during the staff transition. 7. COMMISSION COMMENTS Vice Chair Lenox thanked the Commissioners for getting through all of the grant applications and for making good decisions. 8. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be September 28, 2023 at 6:00 p.m., via Zoom. 5 9.
