1 D R A F T MINUTES ARTS COMMISSION ZOOM MEETING November 30, 2023 6:00 P.M. 1. CALL TO ORDER The virtual meeting was called to order by Chair Lenox at 6:02 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Present: Nancy Lenox, Chair James Smith, Vice Chair Anne Marie Chaney, Commissioner (arrived after roll call) José Aguiñaga, Commissioner Derrell Barber, Commissioner Absent: None Also Present: Daniel Sabillon, Deputy Director, Economic Development Jessi Pederson, Director, Economic Development 3. PUBLIC COMMENTS No comments were received. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES a. Action: Arts Commission Minutes of October 26, 2023 Motion: To approve the Arts Commission minutes of October 26, 2023 as written. Motioned by Commissioner Derrell Barber, second by Commissioner Vice Chair James Smith AYE: Chair Nancy Lenox Vice Chair James Smith Commissioner José Aguiñaga Commissioner Derrell Barber Commissioner Anne Marie Chaney Other: None Passed 5. NEW BUSINESS a. Information: Update on Current Projects Mr. Sabillon gave an update on the Arts Master Plan, which included the following: • Thunderbird Field Art Project: Council approved a special warranty deed for City of Glendale Right of Way for the site. The land was not in the City’s name so this had to be done. The project was delayed and should now be completed by the end of January 2024. The artist, Kristine Kollasch, went to the local elementary school to get the children involved. The children made tiles that will be incorporated into the project. • Arts Master Plan: This is currently in the community survey phase. The goal is to obtain 1,000 survey responses. To date, nearly 500 have been received. The deadline was today, but has been extended past this weekend. Commissioners were encouraged to share the survey link with others. The link will be resent to the Commissioners. b. Action: Upcoming Arts Projects Plan 2 Mr. Sabillon gave a presentation on the upcoming Arts Projects Plan, which included the information on the following: • Arts Commission: Powers, Duties, and Responsibilities • Municipal Arts Fund Overview • Operating Budget Overview – FY24 • Community Activity Account – FY24 • Community Activity Art Plan Discussion – FY25 o Arts Master Plan o Other Art-related Events o Interactive Art o Ballet Under the Stars o Arts Fest o Mural Program o Performing Arts Grants o Ideas or Needs Mr. Sabillon and Ms. Pederson facilitated discussion on needs for the FY24 Arts Budget. Motion: To approve a Community Arts Budget for a grand total amount of $305,000 as follows: • Sponsorship Opportunities: $30,000 • Downtown Art Fest: $50,000 • Interactive Arts and Events: $90,000 • Mural Program: $60,000 • Arts Master Plan Implementation: $75,000 Motioned by Commissioner Derrell Barber, second by Commissioner José Aguiñaga AYE: Chair Nancy Lenox Vice Chair James Smith Commissioner José Aguiñaga Commissioner Derrell Barber Commissioner Anne Marie Chaney Other: None Passed c. STAFF REPORTS Mr. Sabillon reported that a new Commissioner, Ms. Paige Hyde, was sworn in and will be joining the Commission in January 2024. He also reported that Glendale Glitters kicked off this past weekend and had a great turnout with over 24,000 attendees over two days. 7. COMMISSION COMMENTS None. 3 8. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be January 25, 2024 at 6:00 p.m., via Zoom. 9.
