Parks and Recreation Mission Statement
A partnership of employees and community working together to create a better quality of life for
Glendale through the provision of excellent parks, recreational programming, special events, tourism,
and neighborhood and community facilities.

CALL TO ORDER
Chair Martinez called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.

Chair Martinez conducted roll call.

APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
a.
Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Minutes of April 8, 2024.
Commissioner Guzman had a correction to the minutes.
Chair Martinez asked for a motion to approve the minutes as corrected.
Motioned by Commissioner Bud Zomok, seconded by Vice Chair Helena Johnson Bodine,
to approve the minutes as corrected.

NEW STAFF INTRODUCTIONS
New Assistant Director Mike Keane was introduced. Julian Reyes, the new CIP Project
Manager, was not able to attend, but was announced to the Commission.

NEW BUSINESS
a.
INFORMATION: COMMISSION REPORTS
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission members reported on and discussed items
they observed while visiting the parks.
b.
INFORMATION: AQUATICS UPDATE
Mr. Padia presented information on staffing levels, aquatics schedules, and classes being
held.
The Commission discussed the information that was presented.

INFORMATION: UPDATE ON RENAMING EL BARRIO PARK

INFORMATION: UPDATE ON RENAMING EL BARRIO PARK
Mr. Kennedy presented information on the City Council's direction for renaming El Barrio
Park. 
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission's Recommendation was presented at
the City Council Workshop on April 23rd.
The City Council requested additional information.
Staff met with organizers to discuss further efforts requested by the City Council.
Staff will provide the additional petition information to the Commission for
recommendation once received from the organizers.
The Commission discussed the information that was presented.

INFORMATION: BONSALL PARK DESIGN REVIEW
Mr. Kennedy introduced Adam Hawkins with J2 Engineering and Environmental Design.
Mr. Hawkins presented an update on the Bonsall Park Master Plan Project.

INFORMATION: UPDATE ON HEROES REGIONAL PARK MASTER PLAN PROJECT
Mr. Kennedy presented information for the Heroes Park Ball Field groundbreaking ceremony
on Friday, May 17, 2024.
The Commission discussed the information that was presented.

STAFF UPDATES
Mr. Kennedy presented and discussed information with the Commission members.

8.
COMMISSION COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS
Commissioner Snair commented on attending the Arbor Day Festival. 
Commissioner Guzman commented on attending the Arbor Day Festival and Commissioner
Snair's upcoming high school graduation.
Chair Martinez requested an update on replacing smaller play structures, specifically at

Tarrington Ranch Park. 
Mr. Kennedy explained the C.I.P. process and voter approval through bond measures to fund
future projects.

NEXT MEETING
The next regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission will be held on
June 10, 2024, at 5:30 p.m., at the Glendale Civic Center, located at 5750 W. Glenn Dr.,
Glendale, Arizona, 85301.
