DRAFT G Glendale ARIZONA MINUTES AVIATION ADVISORY COMMISSION GLENDALE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT 6801 N. GLEN HARBOR BLVD. GLENDALE, ARIZONA 85307 AIRPORT CONFERENCE ROOM JUNE 19, 2024 6:00 P.M. 1. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Commissioner Zomok at 6:00 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Present: Chair Bud Zomok Vice Chair Michael Portik Commissioner Bill Eikost Commissioner Larry Rovey Commissioner Quentin Tolby Absent: Commissioner James Carneal Also Present: Matt Smith, Airport Administrator Julie Patterson, Management Assistant 3. CITIZEN COMMENTS There were no citizen comments. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES a. Approval of the Aviation Advisory Commission Minutes of May 15, 2024. Motioned by Commissioner Larry Rovey, seconded by Commissioner Bill Eikost AYE: Chair Bud Zomok Vice Chair Michael Portik Commissioner Bill Eikost Commissioner Larry Rovey Commissioner Quentin Tolby Other: Commissioner James Carneal (ABSENT) Passed AIRPORT BUSINESS Airport business was presented by Matt Smith, Airport Administrator. e No update on filing the empty Commissioner slot for Barrel. e Commissioner Portik may have someone applying for the position. e The commission will discuss airport leases and requests for extensions. The first lease expires in 2036 and they continue through 2061. Associations have requested an extension past the life of the lease be granted. e Commissioner Tolby stated that it is good that this conversation is happening now so that all parties are aware. e A few of the Commissioners stated the airport should be run as a business so that it is self-sustainable, which would be in the taxpayer's best interest. e The Experimental Aircraft Association missed their construction deadline. Per the terms of the lease, the renewal option could not be granted or the lease can be canceled. e The property manager of the Glendale Hangar Management has been collecting dues but not paying the city. e The commission briefly discussed airport authorities per their request from the May 15, 2024 minutes. How does it work, what is it, what is it not. Several local mayors are interested. A guest speaker will attend the next meeting to further discuss the topic. e A letter was sent to the FAA to officially change the airport’s name from Glendale Municipal Airport to Glendale Regional Airport. e An aesthetic study for the airport was done. The update for the exterior of the terminal building was shown to the commissioners. There are also options for a new airport monument sign. There would be a matching sign on each entry from Glendale Avenue. e The committee stated the tower option of the proposed monument sign looks like plane propellers. The signage would have to make sense on that option. The height is good and it is modern, but not too trendy to go out of date. e Could you have an airplane on each of these pillars to represent the three stages of aircraft history? They could be etched into the pillar. e The lateral option doesn't stand out as well and the lettering is on the ground like the existing sign. They don't feel the sign is much better than the current option. STAFF REPORTS - For information only Presented by Matt Smith, Airport Administrator 1. Update on current capital projects and the pending five-year Airport Capital Improvement Plan. e New tower equipment is being installed without disruption to the controllers. e ADOT has begun design on the asphalt runway overlay. There is also a grant for runway lighting and signage. The projects will be done at the same time while the runway is closed. The runway will be renamed to 220 as the magnetic north has changed. The project won't begin until next summer at the soonest. e Anew Master Plan will be updated in the future. This may include a site selection for 10. 11. the new air traffic control tower, site selection for self-service fuel tanks and New River re-channel. 2. Operations update e There are 337 based aircraft. 36 are cross-referenced as snowbirds. e A budget update was given. e The FAA is behind in reporting, but gave the April operating numbers for the airport. We had 14,000 operations. Last year we had 11,690 operations in April. e Year to date, we have 3,306 more operations than 2023. LUKE AIR FORCE BASE OPERATIONS Luke representative not present. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Aviation Advisory Commission will be held on August 21, 2024, at 6:00 p.m., in the conference room on the second floor of the Airport terminal building, 6801 N. Glen Harbor Blvd., Glendale, Arizona, 85307.
