Parks and Recreation Mission Statement A partnership of employees and community working together to create a better quality of life for Glendale through the provision of excellent parks, recreational programming, special events, tourism, and neighborhood and community facilities. 1. CALL TO ORDER Vice Chair Helena Johnson-Bodine called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Vice Chair Helena Johnson-Bodine conducted roll call. CITIZEN COMMENTS Yucca District resident, Mr. Cory Robinett, spoke to Heroes Park X-Court bike program and the building at the skate park. Barrel District resident, Mr. Marty Cole, spoke on the Velma Teague Library. Ocotillo District resident, Lorraine Zomok, spoke on Velma Teague Library in Murphy Park. Barrel District resident, Mr. John LeGendre, spoke on the Velma Teague Library in Murphy Park. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES a. Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Minutes of September 9, 2024. Vice Chair Helena Johnson-Bodine asked for a motion to approve the minutes. Motioned by Commissioner Bud Zomok, seconded by Commissioner Tom Traw to approve the minutes as written. INFORMATION: COMMISSION REPORTS The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission members reported on and discussed items they observed while visiting the parks. b. ACTION: ANNUAL CHAIR RECOMMENDATION Mr. Kennedy led a discussion on Chair recommendation for the term beginning February 1, 2025. Motioned by Commissioner Bud Zomok, seconded by Commissioner Kathryn Mawby to recommend approval of Helene Johnson-Bodine as Chair of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission for a one-year term. Motioned by Commissioner Tom Traw, seconded by Teen Commissioner Lauren Snair to recommend approval of Bud Zomok as Vice Chair of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission for a one-year term. INFORMATION: OVERVIEW OF THE ROSE LANE POOL REPAIR PROJECT Mr. Padia presented information regarding repairs at the Rose Lane Aquatics Center Lap Pool and working in collaboration with Engineering. The Commission discussed the information that was presented. e. INFORMATION: UPDATE ON HEROES PARK PROJECT Ms. Barriga presented an update on the first phase of the Heroes Park project, showing how construction has been progressing. The Commission discussed the information that was presented. f. INFORMATION: UPDATE ON SIERRA VERDE PARK IMPROVEMENTS Ms. Barriga presented information on the design phase and funding for park improvements at Sierra Verde Park. The Commission discussed the information that was presented. g. INFORMATION: FOOTHILLS RECREATION AND AQUATICS CENTER UPDATE Mr. Padia provided an update on the installation of a new gym divider in the gymnasium, discussed Halloween events, and the preparation for the purchase of new Fitness Center equipment. The Commission discussed the information that was presented. h. INFORMATION: UPDATE ON THE SHADE STRUCTURE AT FOOTHILLS RECREATION AND AQUATICS CENTER Ms. Barriga provided an update on the installation of solar shade structures in the parking lot at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center. The Commission discussed the information that was presented. 7. STAFF UPDATES Mr. Padia reviewed and discussed volunteer opportunities that the Commissioners can participate in. Ms. Barriga gave an update on CIP projects to the Commission. 8. COMMISSION COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS Commissioner Zomok inquired about funding for Sahuaro Ranch Park. Mr. Kennedy explained it will have to go to a bond election. Commissioner Mawby asked if the Velma Teague Library should be addressed by the Commission. Commissioner Zomok would like the lighting at Murphy Park re-addressed, as 60% of the businesses are female-owned, and it is pitch black by 8 p.m. Vice Chair Johnson-Bodine requested that the Velma Teague Library issue be on a future agenda for the Commission. 9. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission will be a special meeting held on Monday, November 4, 2024, at 5:30 p.m., at the Glendale Civic Center, located at 5750 W. Glenn Dr., Glendale, Arizona, 85301. 10.
