D R A F T MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMISSION GLENDALE CIVIC CENTER 5750 W. GLENN DR. GLENDALE, ARIZONA 85301 NOVEMBER 4, 2024 5:30P.M. Parks and Recreation Mission Statement A partnership of employees and community working together to create a better quality of life for Glendale through the provision of excellent parks, recreational programming, special events, tourism, and neighborhood and community facilities. 1. CALL TO ORDER Vice Chair Helena Johnson Bodine called the meeting to order at 5:30 pm. 2. ROLL CALL Vice Chair Helena Johnson Bodine conducted roll call. Present: Helena Johnson Bodine, Vice Chair Kathryn Mawby, Commissioner Tom Traw, Commissioner Bud Zomok, Commissioner Lynda Pacheco Martinez, Commissioner Absent: Reginald Martinez, Chair Marie Nesfield, Commissioner Lauren Snair, Teen Commissioner Jaclyn Nguyen, Teen Commissioner Also Present: Mike Keane, Assistant Director Heidi Barriga, Deputy Director Manuel Padia, Recreation Administrator Diane Williams, Program Manager Jeneea Jervay-Bush, Recreation Supervisor 3. CITIZEN COMMENTS None. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES Vice Chair Helena Johnson Bodine asked for a motion to approve the minutes. a. Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Minutes of Monday, October 14, 2024. Motioned by Commissioner Bud Zomok, seconded by Commissioner Kathryn Mawby to approve the minutes as written. ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW STAFF 6. NEW BUSINESS a. INFORMATION: STAFF RECOGNITION Mr. Keane presented information regarding the City’s staff recognition program and announced that Ms. Jervay-Bush received her Certified Parks and Recreation Executive certification. b. INFORMATION: COMMISSION REPORTS Commissioner Traw provided comments regarding Heroes Park. Commissioner Pacheco Martinez commented on her park inspections for Bicentennial Park, Desert Mirage Park, and the Retention Basin. Commissioner Zomok commented on his park inspections of Butler Park. Vice Chair Helena Johnson Bodine commented on her event on October 26th at Oasis Park and thanked the staff for their contributions to her HOA event. She also commented on her park inspections for Murphy Park and Heroes Park. c. INFORMATION: PERFORMANCE AUDIT OF THE CITY’S PARK RANGER PROGRAM Mr. Keane provided an overview of the upcoming performance audit being conducted by the city for the Park Ranger Program. The Commission discussed the information that was presented. d. INFORMATION: GLENDALE ADULT CENTER UPDATE Mr. Padia provided an update on projects and programs taking place at the Glendale Adult Center. The Commission discussed the information that was presented. e. DISCUSSION: VELMA TEAGUE LIBRARY Vice Chair Johnson Bodine led a discussion on the Velma Teague Library. Commissioner Zomok asked if demo of the current building is included in the plans to relocate the library. Mr. Keane responded in the positive. Commissioner Zomok asked if the current building could be re-purposed, and to make this an agenda item before it goes to Council. He recommended voting on the use of the library be postponed. Commissioner Pacheco Martinez stated she wants more green space and no more parking. Commissioner Zomok asked for a recommendation to Councilmember Baldenegro that this Commission wants to provide input. 7. STAFF UPDATES Mr. Padia reviewed and discussed volunteer opportunities that the Commissioners can participate in. Ms. Barriga gave an update on CIP projects to the Commission. 8. COMMISSION COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS Commissioner Traw presented information regarding a Veterans Day event on November 11, 2024, at Bonsall Park. 9. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission will be held on Monday, December 9, 2024, at 5:30 p.m., at the Glendale Civic Center, located at 5750 W. Glenn Dr., Glendale, Arizona, 85301. 10. ADJOURNMENT Motioned by Commissioner Tom Traw, seconded by Commissioner Bud Zomok to adjourn the meeting at 6:27 pm.
