D R A F T MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMISSION GLENDALE CIVIC CENTER 5750 W. GLENN DR. GLENDALE, ARIZONA 85301 DECEMBER 9, 2024 5:30P.M. Parks and Recreation Mission Statement A partnership of employees and community working together to create a better quality of life for Glendale through the provision of excellent parks, recreational programming, special events, tourism, and neighborhood and community facilities. 1. CALL TO ORDER Vice Chair Helena Johnson Bodine called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Vice Chair Helena Johnson Bodine conducted a roll call. Present: Helena Johnson Bodine, Vice Chair Marie Nesfield, Commissioner Bud Zomok, Commissioner Lynda Pacheco-Martinez, Commissioner Lauren Snair, Teen Commissioner Jaclyn Nguyen, Teen Commissioner Absent: Kathryn Mawby, Commissioner Also Present: John Kennedy, Director Manuel Padia, Recreation Administrator Diane Williams, Program Manager Attendees: Rory Goree, Ocotillo District Resident David Kushinsky, Sahuaro District Resident Cory Robinett, Yucca District Resident Jeremy Deiman, Yucca District Resident Randy Hearn, Cactus District Resident Jamie Aldama, Yucca District Resident Derek Rivchin, Ocotillo District Resident Houston McPherson, Sahuaro District Resident 3. CITIZEN COMMENTS Mr. Rory Goree, a resident of the Ocotillo District, asked that Glendale do a better job of promoting the skate park for BMX and skateboarding. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES Vice Chair Helena Johnson Bodine asked for a motion to approve the minutes. a. Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Minutes of November 4, 2024. Motioned by Commissioner Lynda Pacheco-Martinez, seconded by Commissioner Bud Zomok to approve the minutes as written. NEW STAFF ANNOUNCEMENTS 6. NEW BUSINESS a. INFORMATION: COMMISSION REPORTS The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission members will report on items related to their Commission Goals. Commissioner Nesfield volunteered at the 50’s concert event at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center. She noted that it was well attended and that everyone had a good time. She also complimented the staff. Thunderbird Paseo Park looks nice, but the ramada had trash left in the barbecue pit by homeless individuals. Attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony at Glen Lakes Park, where her grandson was excited to cut the ribbon. Commissioner Pacheco-Martinez observed graffiti on one of the ramadas at Maryland Lakes Park, and the following day she found it had already been removed. Commissioner Zomok attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony at Glen Lakes Park. Bonsall Park has two homeless tents set up in the center of the park. Commissioner Johnson Bodine attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony held at Glen Lakes Park. b. ACTION: RENAMING OF NEW WORLD PARK Mr. Kennedy led a discussion about the upgrades made at New World Park and provided a history of Al McCoy. The basketball court will also be renamed the Shazam Court. Commissioner Johnson Bodine asked if we had the history of the origin of the name "New World Park." Mr. Kennedy stated that after researching, no information was found regarding the origin of the name. INFORMATION: RECREATION UPDATE Mr. Padia provided information regarding the City’s winter programs, events, activities, and winter camps at the community centers. The commission discussed the information that was presented. Commissioners Snair and Nguyen joined the meeting at 5:49 pm at the conclusion of the Recreation Update agenda item. d. INFORMATION: X-COURT HISTORY & PROGRAMMING Mr. Padia provided an update on the history of the X-Court located at Heroes Regional Park and past programming. Mr. David Kushinsky, a resident of the Sahuaro District, spoke in support of the skate park and hopes for a new future pump track. Mr. Cory Robinett, a resident of the Yucca District, spoke in support of the BMX X-Court, and also mentioned starting a Glendale bike club. Mr. Jeremy Deiman, a resident of the Yucca District, spoke in support of the X-Court and advocated for improvements and repairs to the building there. He also mentioned adding a BMX pump track. Mr. Randy Hearn, a resident of the Cactus District, spoke in support of getting the X-Court building improvements done, and adding a pump track. Mentioned tourism would also improve which would benefit the city. Mr. Jamie Aldama, a resident of the Yucca District, spoke in support of the skate park, continuing to invest in the park, and also promoting the park. Mr. Derek Rivchin, a resident of the Ocotillo District, submitted written comments asking the city to continue to build and invest in our BMX parks. Mr. Huston McPherson, a resident of the Sahuaro District, submitted written comments in support of repairs and upgrades to the X-Court. The commission discussed the information that was presented. e. INFORMATION: UPDATE ON THE BRIAN ANDERSON FIELD Mr. Kennedy provided an update on the Brian Anderson Field. The commission discussed the information that was presented. 7. STAFF UPDATES Mr. Padia reviewed and discussed volunteer opportunities that the Commissioners can participate in. Mr. Kennedy gave an update on CIP projects to the Commission. 8. COMMISSION COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS Teen Commissioner Snair announced that this was her final meeting as her term on the Commission is ending. Commissioner Johnson Bodine attended the Cholla District holiday mixer at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center. A lot of people were in attendance, making it a great event. 9. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission will be held on January 13, 2025, at 5:30 p.m., at the Glendale Civic Center, located at 5750 W. Glenn Dr., Glendale, Arizona, 85301. 10. ADJOURNMENT Motioned by Teen Commissioner Lauren Snair, seconded by Commissioner Marie Nesfield to adjorn the meeting at 6:16 pm.
