ARTS COMMISSION

CALL TO ORDER
Chair Lenox called the meeting to order at 6:13 p.m.

CITIZEN COMMENTS
No citizen comments. Chris Taylor used this portion of the meeting to introduce the
Arts Commission to Carolyn Toliver with the Glendale Arts Council, and to thank Ms.
Toliver for showcasing the Council’s Art Show to the Commission.

NEW BUSINESS
a.
Action: Approval of a portable art project for acquisition into the Portable Art
Collection.
Chris Taylor gave information on a request to purchase an art piece for possible
acquisition into the Portable Art Collection. Chris updated the Commission on their
option to consider purchasing the work, rejecting the work, or delay consideration up
to, but not limited to February 18, 2025.
After asking several questions about the work, the Commission decided to purchase
the item for acquisition. Chris Taylor guided the Commissioners on the required steps
for considering acquiring the piece. The steps were followed in accordance with the
guidelines mandated in the accessioning process. This information item was then
turned into an Action item.
MOTION:  To approve a portable art project (The “G”) for acquisition into the
Portable Art Collection.

Information: Update on Current Projects
Chris Taylor updated the Commission on the upcoming Downtown Glendale Arts and
Culture Fest, scheduled for Saturday, February 1, 2025. The update included themes

of the event, logistics, and potential opportunities for the Commission to be involved,
if they wish.
c.
Information: Update on Current Projects
Chris Taylor, upon request of the Commission during the December 17, 2024
Commission meeting, gave the Commission a more detailed description of three
potential art projects for consideration. These projects include restorations and
renovations to the Elise McCarthy Sensory Garden, a Site-Specific Public art project,
and a Downtown Mural campaign. After providing more specific details about each
project, the Commission responded favorably to all three projects, and that Chris
Taylor and Ms. Pederson work together over the next three months to come up with
specific financials for all three projects, for the Commission to vote for approval for
appropriated funding.
6.
STAFF REPORTS
Chris Taylor reminded the Arts Commission about the Glendale Arts Council’s Art and
fundraising event scheduled for Friday, January 10. All Commissioners were invited to
attend.
Chris Taylor reminded the Commission that this meeting was the final meeting with
Ms. Lenox as Chair and Mr. Smith as Vice-Chair, and that, as voted by the
Commission, those roles would be reversed beginning in February of 2025.
Chris Taylor awarded Mr. Aguinaga’s service to the Arts Commission with a
commemorative plaque as presented to him by the City Clerk.

COMMISSION COMMENTS
Chair Lenox thanked Commissioner Aguinaga for his service.
Commissioner Aguinaga thanked the Commission for their efforts.
Vice-Chair Smith thanked Chair Lenox for her leadership as Chair over the past two
years. Chair Lenox expressed her excitement to see Mr. Smith as Chair moving
forward.
Chris Taylor reminded the Arts Commission of their option to purchase a piece of art
from the Glendale Arts Council. The Commission chose to examine the possible
pieces at a later date, and contact Chris Taylor is there was a unanimous consensus
on an art piece at a later date.
8.
 NEXT MEETING
The next regular meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be on Tuesday,
February 18th, 2025 at 6:00 p.m., in the Vault Conference Room at the Civic Center
Annex, 5752 W. Glenn Drive, Glendale AZ 85301.
9.

Motion: To adjourn the Arts Commission meeting of January 7th, 2025 at 7:21 P.M.
