D R A F T MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMISSION GLENDALE CIVIC CENTER 5750 W. GLENN DR. GLENDALE, ARIZONA 85301 FEBRUARY 10, 2025 5:30P.M. Parks and Recreation Mission Statement A partnership of employees and community working together to create a better quality of life for Glendale through the provision of excellent parks, recreational programming, special events, tourism, and neighborhood and community facilities. 1. CALL TO ORDER Chair Helena Johnson Bodine called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Chair Helena Johnson Bodine conducted roll call. The new Commissioner, Gilbert Longoria, was introduced. He spoke briefly and shared his background and reasons for joining the commission. Present: Helena Johnson Bodine, Chair Bud Zomok, Vice Chair Lynda Pacheco-Martinez, Commissioner Kathryn Mawby, Commissioner Marie Nesfield, Commissioner Jaclyn Nguyen, Teen Commissioner Gilbert Longoria, Commissioner Also Present: John Kennedy, Director Heidi Barriga, Deputy Director Manuel Padia, Recreation Administrator Diane Williams, Program Manager Attendees: Cory Robinett, Yucca District Resident Joanne Henning, Cholla District Resident Brandon Nowicki, Sahuaro District Resident Erik Brill, Peoria Resident 3. CITIZEN COMMENTS Yucca District resident, Mr. Cory Robinett, commented on Foothills Skate Park and the X-Court at Heroes Park. Cholla District resident, Ms. Joanne Henning, commented on Chaparral Park. Sahuaro District resident, Mr. Brandon Nowicki, commented on Foothills Skate Park. Peoria resident, Mr. Erik Brill, commented on Foothills Skate Park. Chair Helena Johnson Bodine asked staff to explain when citizen comments are brought to the commission meeting how it is handled. Mr. Kennedy explained when citizen comments are not part of an agenda item, the commission can request this during the Commission Comments and Suggestions portion of the meeting. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES a. Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Minutes of January 13, 2025. Chair Helena Johnson Bodine asked for a motion to approve the minutes. Motioned by Commissioner Marie Nesfield, seconded by Teen Commissioner Jaclyn Nguyen to approve the minutes as written. ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW STAFF 6. NEW BUSINESS a. INFORMATION: COMMISSION REPORTS The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission members reported on items related to their Commission Goals. b. ACTION: PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMISSION GOALS FOR 2025 Mr. Kennedy led a discussion on goals for the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission in the year ahead. Commissioner Nesfield recommended the second goal include verbiage to volunteer at least once per year. Chair Johnson Bodine asked for a motion to approve the Commission goals for 2025 to include the change for each Commissioner to volunteer at least once a year. ACTION: GLENDALE @ PLAY DISTRIBUTION Ms. Barriga led a discussion on the distribution of the Glendale @ Play publication. The Commission discussed the information that was presented. Chair Johnson Bodine asked if there is a motion to approve a new approach to the distribution of the Glendale @ Play magazine. INFORMATION: CONSTRUCTION PROJECT UPDATE Ms. Barriga provided an update on the construction projects taking place at Bonsall Park North and Heroes Park. The Commission discussed the information that was presented. 7. STAFF UPDATES Mr. Padia reviewed and discussed volunteer opportunities that the Commissioners can participate in. a. This report allows the Staff of Parks & Recreation Department to update the Commission. The Commission is prohibited from discussing or acting on any of the items presented by the Staff since they are not itemized on the Parks & Recreation Advisory Commission Agenda. 8. COMMISSION COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS Chair Johnson Bodine, Vice Chair Zomok, and Commissioners Nesfield and Pacheco-Martinez would like to see the Foothills Skate Park as an agenda item at a future commission meeting. Chair Johnson Bodine asked if Council would be moving forward with a Bond Committee and if that committee makes a recommendation to go to bond, would Parks and Recreation be included? Director Kennedy responded with information regarding the next bond election. 9. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission will be held on March 10, 2025, at 5:30 p.m., at the Glendale Civic Center, located at 5750 W. Glenn Dr., Glendale, Arizona, 85301. 10.
