D R A F T MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMISSION GLENDALE CIVIC CENTER 5750 W. GLENN DR. GLENDALE, ARIZONA 85301 MARCH 10, 2025 5:30P.M. Parks and Recreation Mission Statement A partnership of employees and community working together to create a better quality of life for Glendale through the provision of excellent parks, recreational programming, special events, tourism, and neighborhood and community facilities. 1. CALL TO ORDER Chair Johnson Bodine called the meeting to order at 5:31 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Present: Helena Johnson Bodine, Chair Bud Zomok, Vice Chair Marie Nesfield, Commissioner Gilbert Longoria, Commissioner Lynda Pacheco-Martinez, Commissioner Absent: Kathryn Mawby, Commissioner Jaclyn Nguyen, Teen Commissioner Also Present: John Kennedy, Director Mike Keane, Assistant Director Heidi Barriga, Deputy Director Manuel Padia, Recreation Administrator Diane Williams, Program Manager Pinky Tantillo, Management Assistant Attendees: Cory Robinett, Yucca District Resident Erik Brill, Peoria Resident Brandon Nowicki, Sahuaro District Resident Joseph Sirko, Cholla District Resident Kevin Bierworth, Sahuaro District Resident 3. CITIZEN COMMENTS None for non-agenda items. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES a. Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Minutes of February 10, 2025. Motioned by Commissioner Gilbert Longoria, seconded by Commissioner Marie Nesfield to approve the minutes as written. NEW BUSINESS a. INFORMATION: COMMISSION REPORTS The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission members will report on items related to their Commission Goals. b. ACTION: VETERANOS PARK PROJECTS Mr. Keane presented information on the results gathered from the community meeting and the survey conducted in February for potential projects at Veteranos Park. Chair Johnson Bodine asked if there was a motion to approve in favor of the community survey's majority vote results. INFORMATION: PRESENTATION ON HISTORY OF FOOTHILLS SK8 COURT Mr. Kennedy presented information on the history of the Foothills SK8 Court. The Commission discussed the information that was presented. Mr. Cory Robinett, Yucca District resident, commented on Foothills SK8 Park and the X-Court at Heroes Park. Erik Brill, Peoria resident, commented on the Foothills SK8 Park. Mr. Brandon Nowicki, Sahuaro District resident, commented on the Foothills SK8 Park and the X-Court at Heroes Park. Mr. Joseph Sirko, Cholla District resident, commented on the Foothills SK8 Park. Mr. Kevin Bierworth, Sahuaro District resident commented on the Foothills SK8 Park and the X-Court at Heroes Park. d. INFORMATION: RECREATION UPDATE Mr. Padia provided an update on the Recreation Division’s programs, activities, and events. e. INFORMATION: ARBOR DAY EVENT Mr. Keane provided information regarding the City’s Arbor Day event. f. INFORMATION: CONSTRUCTION PROJECT UPDATE Ms. Barriga provided an update on the construction projects taking place within the Parks and Recreation Department at Greenway Granada Splashpad, Bonsall Park North, Sierra Verde Park, and Hereos Regional Park. 6. STAFF UPDATES Mr. Padia reviewed and discussed volunteer opportunities that the Commissioners can participate in. Mr. Kennedy reviewed the information regarding the Annual Board and Commission Dinner. a. This report allows the Staff of Parks & Recreation Department to update the Commission. The Commission is prohibited from discussing or acting on any of the items presented by the Staff since they are not itemized on the Parks & Recreation Advisory Commission Agenda. 7. COMMISSION COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS Commissioner Zomok commented on the Senior Prom held at the Glendale Community Center, and the Teddy Bear Picnic. He also suggested aligning the picnic in September, when National Teddy Bear Day is. Commissioner Zomok also inquired about the cost of transporting people from the northern part of the city to the Heroes Park X-Court. Chair Johnson Bodine is looking forward to seeing the Parks and Recreation agenda that will be presented at the Glendale University class on April 9th. 8. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission will be held on April 14, 2025, at 5:30 p.m., at the Glendale Civic Center, located at 5750 W. Glenn Dr., Glendale, Arizona, 85301. 9.
