D R A F T MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMISSION GLENDALE CIVIC CENTER 5750 W. GLENN DR. GLENDALE, ARIZONA 85301 MAY 12, 2025 5:30P.M. Parks and Recreation Mission Statement A partnership of employees and community working together to create a better quality of life for Glendale through the provision of excellent parks, recreational programming, special events, tourism, and neighborhood and community facilities. 1. CALL TO ORDER Chair Johnson called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Chair Johnson conducted a roll call. Present: Helena Johnson, Chair Bud Zomok, Vice Chair Marie Nesfield, Commissioner Lynda Martinez, Commissioner Absent: Jaclyn Nguyen, Teen Commissioner Gilbert Longoria, Commissioner Kathryn Mawby, Commissioner Also Present: John Kennedy, Director Mike Keane, Assistant Director Heidi Barriga, Deputy Director Manny Padia, Administrator Diane Williams, Program Manager Attendees: Cory Robinett, Yucca District Resident Andrew Marriott, Consultant for Architekton Commissioner Longoria arrived at 5:33 p.m., after the roll call and the approval of the March 10, 2025 minutes. 3. CITIZEN COMMENTS No comments were submitted for non-agenda items. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES Chair Helena Johnson asked for a motion to approve the minutes. a. Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Minutes of March 10, 2025. Motioned by Vice Chair Bud Zomok, seconded by Commissioner Marie Nesfield to approve the minutes as written. ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW STAFF 6. NEW BUSINESS a. INFORMATION: COMMISSION REPORTS The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission members reported on items related to their Commission Goals. b. INFORMATION: PARKS GENERAL OBLIGATION BOND UPDATE Mr. Kennedy presented information on the plans for a future Parks General Obligation Bond Election. The Commission discussed the information that was presented. c. INFORMATION: SK8 PARK TO X-COURT TRANSPORTATION UPDATE Ms. Barriga presented an update on transportation to and from the Foothills SK8 Park and the X-Court at Glendale Heroes Regional Park. The Commission discussed the information that was presented. Mr. Cory Robinett advocated for a BMX pump track in the north area of the City, or at Thunderbird Conservation Park. He mentioned that transporting kids across the city is not a good idea for many reasons. d. INFORMATION: AQUATICS SEASON PREVIEW Mr. Padia provided a preview of the upcoming aquatics season. e. INFORMATION: UPDATE ON PARKS MAINTENANCE TREE PLANTING ACTIVITIES Mr. Keane provided an update on tree-planting activities across the city. The Commission discussed the information that was provided. f. INFORMATION: THUNDERBIRD CONSERVATION PARK PROJECT UPDATE Ms. Barriga provided an update on the design for the Thunderbird Conservation Park Project and the results from the public meeting held on May 6, 2025. g. INFORMATION: HEROES RECREATION CENTER UPDATE Mr. Kennedy introduced Andrew Marriott, the consultant from Architekton, who is working on the potential Glendale Heroes Regional Park Recreation Center. Mr. Marriott presented information regarding the project and the results from the public meeting held on April 30, 2025, and the online survey. The Commission discussed the information that was presented. 7. STAFF UPDATES Mr. Padia reviewed and discussed volunteer opportunities that the Commissioners can participate in. He also reviewed the Hook A Kid on Fishing event. Staff provided copies of the Glendale @ Play recreation magazine, and copies of the options for community, recreation, and pool amenities for the Heroes Park Recreation Center. a. This report allows the Staff of Parks and Recreation Department to update the Commission. The Commission is prohibited from discussing or acting on any of the items presented by the Staff since they are not itemized on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Agenda. 8. COMMISSION COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS Chair Helena Johnson completed the Glendale University program offered by the City and shared many compliments about the program. She also thanked the Recreation team for having the Rec on Wheels van at Oasis Park HOA Easter Egg Hunt. 9. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission will be held on June 9, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., at the Glendale Civic Center, located at 5750 W. Glenn Dr., Glendale, Arizona, 85301. 10.
