D R A F T MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMISSION GLENDALE CIVIC CENTER 5750 W. GLENN DR. GLENDALE, ARIZONA 85301 OCTOBER 13, 2025 5:30P.M. Parks and Recreation Mission Statement A partnership of employees and community working together to create a better quality of life for Glendale through the provision of excellent parks, recreational programming, special events, tourism, and neighborhood and community facilities. 1. CALL TO ORDER Chair Johnson called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Chair Johnson conducted roll call. The new Commissioner, Georgette Berry, was introduced. She spoke briefly and shared her background and reasons for joining the Commission. Present: Helena Johnson, Chair Bud Zomok, Vice Chair Marie Nesfield, Commissioner Gilbert Longoria, Commissioner Lynda Martinez, Commissioner Georgette Berry, Commissioner Jaclyn Nguyen, Teen Commissioner Absent: Kathryn Mawby, Commissioner Also Present: John Kennedy, Director Mike Keane, Assistant Director Heidi Barriga, Deputy Director Diane Williams, Program Manager Commissioner Mawby arrived at 5:54 p.m., after the roll call and at the conclusion of the discussion of the Park Planning Process agenda item. 3. CITIZEN COMMENTS No comments were submitted for non-agenda items. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES Chair Johnson asked for a motion to approve the minutes. a. Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Minutes of September 8, 2025. Motioned by Vice Chair Bud Zomok, seconded by Commissioner Marie Nesfield to approve the minutes as written. NEW BUSINESS a. INFORMATION: COMMISSION REPORTS The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission members reported on items related to their Commission Goals. b. ACTION: ANNUAL CHAIR RECOMMENDATION Mr. Kennedy led a discussion on the Chair recommendation for the term beginning February 1, 2026. Motioned by Vice Chair Bud Zomok, seconded by Commissioner Marie Nesfield to recommend approval of Helena Johnson as Chair of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission for a one-year term. ACTION: ANNUAL VICE-CHAIR RECOMMENDATION Mr. Kennedy led a discussion on the Vice-Chair recommendation for the term beginning February 1, 2026. Motioned by Commissioner Marie Nesfield, seconded by Commissioner Gilbert Longoria to recommend approval of Bud Zomok as Vice-Chair of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission for a one-year term. INFORMATION: PARK PLANNING PROCESS Mr. Kennedy led a discussion regarding park planning processes. e. INFORMATION: POOL SEASON & SUMMER PROGRAMS RECAP Mr. Keane provided a recap of this summer's programs and pool season. f. INFORMATION: UPDATE ON AL MCCOY MEMORIAL PARK Ms. Barriga provided an update on the dedication ceremony of the Al McCoy Memorial Park. g. INFORMATION: UPDATE ON BONSALL PARK PROJECT Ms. Barriga provided an update on the Bonsall Park Master Plan. h. INFORMATION: UPDATE ON VETERANOS PARK Mr. Keane provided an update on the Veteranos Park project. 6. STAFF UPDATES Mr. Keane reviewed the volunteer opportunities that the Commissioners can participate in. a. This report allows the Staff of Parks and Recreation Department to update the Commission. The Commission is prohibited from discussing or acting on any of the items presented by the Staff since they are not itemized on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Agenda. 7. COMMISSION COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS There were no comments or suggestions made by the Commissioners. 8. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission will be held on November 10, 2025, at 5:30 p.m., at the Glendale Civic Center, located at 5750 W. Glenn Dr., Glendale, Arizona, 85301. 9.
