D R A F T MINUTES LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD GLENDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY 5959 W. BROWN ST. GLENDALE, ARIZONA 85302 JANUARY 14, 2026 6:00P.M. 1. CALL TO ORDER 2. ROLL CALL Present: Theresa Fowler, Chair Meegan Tosh, Vice Chair Cody Bro, Board Member April Greer, Board Member Joanne Henning, Board Member Thomas Varela, Board Member Jodi Decker, Board Member Mia Gradillas, Board Member/Teen Also Present:Kimberly Hall, Director-Community Services Dawn Ferro, Deputy Director-Library Services Kristin Fletcher-Spear, Library Administrator-Public Services Esther Peneff, Management Assistant 3. CITIZEN COMMENTS 1) Adrienne Johnson commented on explicit library books. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES a. Library Advisory Board Minutes of December 10, 2025. Motioned by Board Member Cody Bro, seconded by Board Member Thomas Varela to approve the December 10, 2025 Library Advisory board minutes. NEW BUSINESS a. INFORMATION: ARIZONA SONGWRITERS GATHERING PROGRAM Ms. Fletcher-Spear presented the Arizona Songwriters program to be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 10 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at the Main Public Library. The schedule can be found on azsongwritersgathering.com. 6. DEPUTY DIRECTOR UPDATE Ms. Ferro gave updates on the following: Budget-entered at the end of December. Staff training: Autism awareness on 1/12 and 2/12. Nov/Dec program reports. Writers in Residence—Fox 10 will have a segment with an author and a patron. Team member promotion: Priscilla Davila, formerly Customer Service Assistant to Public Services Assistant on December 13th. New team members: Stacy Vilt, Public Service Assistant, started on January 12th and Ash Kingery, Public Service Assistant, started on January 20th. Recruiting for Circulation Supervisor at the Main library—interviews on 1/16. Elf on the shelf, Elfie, was successful on Facebook and Instagram. Facilities: Main library-chiller replacement is almost done. Foothills library-chiller is done, and the new LED lighting has been positioned correctly. Heroes library—meeting room expansion (2050 sf) with an extra restroom is estimated for completion on January 19th. Shade sails and lighting were also added to the patio space. Velma Teague library—The library will be closed from January 5–March 3, 2026, for Murphy Park improvements. The library rendering work is in progress with DWL and hope to share soon. January 21st—library and parks bond initiative city council discussion. 7. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS Board Member Henning wanted to know why the renderings are taking so long. Board Member Decker was happy to hear there was a birding program. Also, commented on the public comment regarding library books. Ms. Decker wanted to know if the library has a review or rating system in place currently. Director Hall stated that there is a process of review. Ms. Fletcher-Spear stated that there is a Statement of Concern form that a patron can submit and then goes through the review process and explains to the board members. Board Member Bro asked what the library's guidelines for what to promote and placement. Ms. Fletcher-Spear stated there is a policy of inclusiveness to keep it well-rounded with our diverse culture. Director Hall stated that we are part of the American Library Association and follow their guidance. Board Member Varela stated his daughter picked up a movie to watch. However, had trouble playing the movie twice and did let a team member know about it. 8. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Library Advisory Board will be held on February 11, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., in the Board Room of the Main Library, located at 5959 W. Brown St., Glendale, Arizona, 85302. 9.
