(4,000- character limit) The Developing STEM Identity grant will target middle school students during a critical period of academic development when interest in STEM disciplines typically begins to wane and genderand racial gaps become evident leading to decreased high school and post-secondary STEM students. Research indicates factors that contribute towards lack of identity development within STEM are students not engaged with STEM classroom experiences, and absence of positive interactions with peers and adult role models related to STEM subjects. The Maricopa County School Superintendent's Office (MCSS) will partner with Peoria Unified School District (PUSD) middle school Technology Life Career (TLC) classes to pilot the re-design of class content for five school sites to include Hacking STEM Lessons and the use of Micro-bits at 32 school sites within the district. The re-design class content and use of Micro-bits will be used to implement engaging STEM classroom experiences and provide access to adult industry role models using the MCSS EducatorPROConnect (EPC) platform. The EPC platform connects classrooms with industry professionals to provide real-world and career pathways discussions and supports. PUSD Objectives, Activities and Benefits include: By the end of the grant period, PUSD will pilot in five K-8 schools a re-designed content for 7" & 8" grades TLC classes using Hacking the STEM Library and Micro-bits lessons to provide engaging identity development lessons with access to industry professionals using the MCSS EPC platform. PUSD will implement new class content using Micro:bit programming lessons with 27 additional TLC K-8 school sites. Using the MCSS EPC platform, PUSD will video conference female and diverse industry professionals in all 32 TLC schoolsites focused on 7 & 8"" grades to discuss STEM careers & provide support with using Micro bit programming lessons. Benefits for PUSD include: 1. Resources to pilot with five schools a re-designed middle school curriculum to include Micro-bits lessons and Hacking the STEM Library. 2. Resources to implement STEM curriculum with current technology. MCSSwill also partner with Choice Learning Academy (CLA), Alhambra Elementary School District focused on 5''-8th grades. CLA has the mission to engage students in learning that is deep and long- lasting and inspires a love of learning and personalconnection to their academic experience. The partnership with MCSS & State Farm funding will provide resources to allow five teachers to implement STEAM classroom project-based units with access to female and diverse industry role models using the EPC platform. CLA Objectives, Activities and Benefits: By the end of the grant period five teachers from CLA will: 1. Use resources to develop 2-3 lessons for an engaging STEAM project-based unit integrated with current academic standards. 2. Video conference industry professionals using the EPC platform to support with STEAM project-based units and awareness of career pathways. 3. Teaches will share via webinar the student projects with teachers district wide and throughout Maricopa County, hosted by MCSS. CLA activities include: 1.Teachers will develop one STEAM project (~2-3 lessons) that will connect industry professionals. 2. Teachers will use the EPC platform to request professionals for classroom STEAM projects. 3. Teachers will purchase resources forthe STEAM projects. The benefits include: 1. Increased student awareness of STEAM career pathways. 2. Engaged authentic lessons in STEAM. PUSD and CLA provide the following benefits: 1. Having an adult mentor or role model during adolescence has been found to predict academic success. Students in poverty urban areas lack role models and the knowledge of the career opportunities available for their future. Many young minorities and women do not aspire to be scientists or technology experts because they lack role models in STEM professions. STEM and career identity developmentis critical for supporting and enabling women and underrepresented minorities to persist in STEM education and pursue careers in STEM. STEM professional role models have been shown to enable students to develop an identity in STEM and to bolster STEM career aspirations. The specific grant outcomes include developing student STEM Identity through 1. access to female and diverse industry and professionalrole models 2. access to engaging experiential learning 3. increased soft skills in classrooms through collaboration and communication with adults and peers. 4. increased student awareness of STEM careers and pathways. Developing teacher confidence and competence in teaching STEM curriculum and content through 1. deliberate prepared STEM lessons, 2. engagement and learning from industry professionals, 3. developing pilot class content for district implementation 4. Integrating current technologies into classroom content for middie school students. MCSS will receive the funding from State Farm, partner with the school districts and disburse the funding to the school districts to purchase classroom resources.
