Project Vicinity Map East Carefree Drive at East Cave Creek Road Drainage Improvements The un-named wash (shown in blue) is a tributary of Galloway Wash and parallels East Cave Creek Road through the center of town. Based on approved drainage report for development adjacent to the un-named wash, the Reserve at Tranquil Trail, the un-named wash has a 100-year flow of 321cfs as it exits the development at Tranquil Trail at the 2-42-inch CMPs. These flows continue northwest within the natural incised wash, an open-concrete channel, and enclosed storm drain pipes, and outlets into Galloway Wash approximately 0.5 miles away. The project location, highlighted above, will provide an all-weather crossing of Carefree Drive, approximately 250-feet east of the intersection of East Cave Creek Road and East Carefree Drive. The existing drainage facilities currently get inundated with storm water due to under- sized pipes under the roadway. This project will address the localized flooding of East Carefree Drive at the condominiums. The un-named wash is the northern boundary of the Carefree Terrace Condominiums. A concrete channel was constructed with the Carefree Terrace Condominiums (before 1976) to help contain the flows into the 24-inch pipe crossings under Carefree Drive. Based on the Reserve at Tranquil Trails Drainage Report (Argus Consulting, Feb 2014) a 100-year flow at 321cfs with potential for scour based on estimated velocities (2.0-7.0fps). Site visits after monsoon storms in 2021, confirmed high concentrations of debris and sediment being transported by flows. This project will assess the capacity of the existing 24-inch pipes beneath Carefree Drive, recommend a preferred alternative, and develop construction plans to mitigate the flooding occurring within the roadway. Existing right-of-way of Carefree Drive is 60 feet. Project will require temporary construction easements to be obtained.
