Heart of Glendale Bronze Plaques -Historic Preservation Commission-December 22, 2016: During the “Business from the Floor” portion of the meeting, Mr. Casares asked the Commission for future consideration of various projects in the Heart of Glendale. Mr. Casares suggested changing the Heart of Glendale name to Barrio de Corazon y Alma de Glendale and create a sort of historical area for the Hispanic Community in downtown Glendale. -Historic Preservation Commission, November 30, 2017: • Staff provided a brief update on the Bronze Plaques for the Heart of Glendale Neighborhood, stating that staff was continuing work with community members on placing bronze plaques at strategic locations. • Staff mentioned that that they would continue to work with Bobby Casares and Superintendent Joe Quintana on the plaques and a tour of the homes that have plaques. • One Commissioner asked if the tour would be a self-guiding walking tour, staff responded that it would. Historic Preservation Commission, September 27, 2018: • Staff provided a brief history of the site and provided updates on the placement of the plaques. • Mr. Casares made a presentation, stating that his interest was to change the name of the neighborhood from Hart of Glendale to Barrio de Corazon y Alma. He also spoke about the rich history of the area. • Staff stated that they would continue working with Mr. Casares about the geographical aspect and plaque placement. -Historic Preservation Commission, January 24, 2019: • Staff provided an update and a PowerPoint presentation on the item. • Heart of Glendale is primarily located south of Glendale Avenue, east of Grand Avenue and west of 51st Avenue. • Based on the minutes, Mr. Casares, also provided a presentation. • Staff discussed the request placement of commemorative bronze plaques in the Heart of Glendale neighborhood. • A possible historic “walking tour” was only suggested as a consideration. • Staff suggested the locations for the placement of the plaques at or adjacent to Cerreta Candy Company, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, and El Barrio Park. • Examples of different plaques were provided to the Commission. • Staff asked if the Commissioners approved of the three locations selected; the Commissioners all agreed to move forward. Historic Preservation Commission-May 23, 2019: • The discussion was more focused on the walking tour in the Heart of Glendale. A map was presented showing the route which contained several key historic areas. • Staff suggested areas that could be part of the waking tour (Carreta’s Candy Company, Our Lady of Guadalupe Capilla Church, Issac E. Imes Magnet School, El Barrio Park, and Beet Sugar Factory). • Further discuss for the plaques was made, Chairperson Quinn suggested that the plaques could be photo-engraved, so the unique area that are no longer present in the neighborhood oar look incredibly different can still have recognition.
