1 of 2 September 12, 2022 City of Glendale Historic Preservation Commission Jessi Pederson, Assistant Director, Economic Development Beet Sugar Factory Property Update At the request of the City of Glendale Historic Preservation Commission, the purpose of this memorandum is to provide an update on the Beet Sugar Factory located at 6850 North 52nd Avenue. The historic Beet Sugar Factory is privately owned by Sugar Aspirations, LLC. The city’s Office of Economic Development maintains an on-going relationship with the owner of this property. In December 2020, city staff from the Building Safety Department, the Fire Marshal’s Office and Economic Development, walked through the Beet Sugar Factory with the owner. Staff provided guidance to the owner regarding the redevelopment process and options to rehabilitate the vacant property. Ownership continues to evaluate development options for the property as well as building improvements to rehabilitate the physical structure. One pending factor that has been considered an obstacle to the redevelopment of the property, is the existing parcels of city-owned property that that run along and under the factory on the north and south sides of the property. In the image below, the parcels outlined in red are city- owned and the factory parcel is outlined in light blue. Economic Development MEMORANDUM The city is in current negotiations with the property owner to resolve the obstacle and the city anticipates the resolution to be completed within this current fiscal year. The Office of Economic Development will continue to work with the property owner of the Beet Sugar Factory and surrounding property owners to encourage the rehabilitation of this building and the redevelopment of this area.
