About the Grant Program Application:
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community 12% Gaming Grant Program (“Program”) application
will serve to provide a comprehensive review of the programming requests for Arizona cities, towns,
counties, non-municipal public service organizations, and non-profit organizations selected to apply for
grant funding. It is not the intent of the Program to award grants that would benefit individuals, be used
as sponsorships, be used for religious activities, primarily fund the indirect or administrative costs of a
program/organization, or be used for the direct benefit of the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian
Community.

Arizona Science Center (ASC) began in 1980 as a pilot project of the Junior League of Phoenix. Passionate
about establishing the state’s first institute dedicated to science learning for people of all ages, the
League incorporated the Center in 1982, and our doors officially opened in 1984. In that first year, more
than 87,000 guests visited, and audiences continued to grow each year. Today ASC welcomes more than
500,000 visitors annually, championing science learning for people of all ages through exciting, on-site
experiences, special events, educational programs, community outreach, and more.
ASC offers visitors four floors of interactive galleries focused on themes including biology, aviation,
engineering, physics, digital technology, sustainability and renewable energy, and features 300+ hands-
on exhibits, live demonstrations, a Giant Screen Theater, Planetarium, and world-renowned traveling
exhibitions. Throughout the year, ASC hosts many special events including Snow Week, Sustainability
Weekend, and the Arizona Science & Engineering Fair (AzSEF), along with special programs and lectures
for adult audiences.
In addition, ASC offers an extensive variety of educational programs for students and teachers across
the state. Every year, more than 140,000 students and teachers visit the Center on an educational field
trip, and of these, nearly 50,000 come from Title I schools who visit free of charge thanks to community
support. In addition to field trips, the Center offers STEM learning through Camp Innovation, Girls in
STEM, and outreach programs including Science on Wheels, providing more than 80 distinct STEM
lessons, and serving nearly 60,000 students across the state each year. ASC’s Teen Advisory Board
oversees special programs and events to nurture STEM learning and career guidance for teens. CREATE
at Arizona Science Center provides a place for visitors to practice design and creation, using high-tech
equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and traditional tools, and offers workshops and career
pathways programs including CREATE U for junior high and high school students from Title I schools.
Every year, more than 5,000 teachers benefit from the Freeport-McMoRan Foundation’s Center for
Leadership in Learning through professional development programs, workshops, coaching, and special
events.
In spring 2020, ASC began transitioning much of its in-person STEM education programs online which
included daily live demonstrations and interactive activities, pre-recorded programs, and coaching
sessions for parents and teachers, reaching an average of 4,000 viewers per day. In summer 2020, ASC
introduced its virtual version of Camp Innovation, offering a variety of themes and activities throughout
June and July. Additionally, ASC launched a brand new effort with CONNECT – a comprehensive online
STEM education center, providing classes, programs, lesson plans, support and other resources for
students, teachers and parents.

Project Name: Arizona Science Center’s Hands-On Science Discovery Programming for Low-Income
Youth
Provide a brief description of the project being submitted to the 12% SRPMIC Grant program. In the
description provide a summary of the relevant experience, administrative activity, and program
development related to the grant request.
Equipping today’s children for success in 21st-century careers is a huge task. Beyond understanding the
basic subjects, students must be proficient in today’s technologies, and adept at critical thinking,
problem solving, and collaboration – skills that are inherent in science, technology, engineering, and
math (STEM).
Regrettably, too many Arizona teachers are struggling to equip their students with the tools they need
to succeed, especially when it comes to STEM. Many don’t have the funding or other resources to
provide robust STEM education programs that engage students, and many don’t have a STEM
background and lack the confidence to teach it well. The challenges for low-income children from Title I
schools (where at least 40% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch), are even greater as they
typically have less access to quality education and enriching educational opportunities.
Providing exceptional STEM education to children in our community who need it most is what drives
ASC’s Hands-On Science Discovery Programming for Low-Income Youth. Comprised of Focused Field Trips
and Science on Wheels, these signature programs open the door to STEM learning for tens of thousands
of underserved children in our community every year.
Created more than 30 years ago as one of ASC’s first STEM Education initiatives, Focused Field Trips
provide students and teachers from K-8, Title I schools the opportunity to visit ASC at no cost and
experience STEM through four floors of interactive galleries, over 300 hands-on exhibits, live
demonstrations and more. Each Focused Field Trip consists of 30-40 students with 2-5 teachers and
chaperones, with the field trip lasting 4-5 hours. This allows enough time for students to explore the
Center and cover the specific areas to support classroom study. Teachers may also add on extra
experiences including traveling exhibitions and films in the Giant Screen Theater and Dorrance
Planetarium.
Prior to each field trip, participating teachers attend a two-hour professional development workshop
held at ASC. Offered twice per month, workshops help familiarize teachers with ASC and its many
galleries and structure their field trip to best support current classroom curriculum. Teachers are given
Gallery Guides that detail the specific STEM lessons and grade-level science standards showcased in
each gallery and materials for pre- and post-visit in-class activities.
Created more than 20 years ago, Science on Wheels brings ASC’s expertise and resources directly to
classrooms and communities across Arizona. Led by ASC’s Learning staff, Science on Wheels offers more
than 80 distinct STEM lessons in a variety of formats that teachers can choose from. Individual
classroom programs typically run for 60-minutes and serve approximately 30 students. Large group
assembly programs and Family Science Nights involve multiple hands-on STEM activities running up to
two hours, and typically serve up to 300 people. STEM Extravaganzas involve an entire K-8 school for a
whole day, and feature numerous hands-on STEM activities and challenges that all students in each
grade participate in, rotating through different stations.
ASC’s Hands-On Science Discovery Programming for Low-Income Youth directly addresses the significant
need for high-quality, comprehensive STEM education and support for students and teachers at no cost
to the student, teacher or school. Moreover, providing such support during the K-8 academic years is
vital for student success down the line, as the nonprofit STEM business partnership, Change the
Equation, notes, “While Arizona consistently ranks in the top 10 for STEM opportunities, it ranks near
the bottom in preparing students for those very jobs that are going to be in such abundance in the next
ten years or so.”
Given these challenges, our teachers can’t do it alone, and this is why ASC’s educational programs
including Focused Field Trips and Science on Wheels are in such demand. Bringing the volume and scope
of STEM education to tens of thousands of students and teachers who need it most is only possible
because of the tremendous generosity from local corporations, foundations, and individuals who
contribute each year.
Children learn by doing and they remember what they have personally experienced. Focused Field
Trips and Science on Wheels programs are designed to provide relevant and engaging learning
opportunities with real world application. Students on field trips have the opportunity learn and
experience STEM in unique ways, including building their own electric circuits in Get Charged Up
gallery, experiencing the States of Matter during a live demonstration or exploring more than 300
hands-on exhibits. Science on Wheels brings the excitement of 80 different hands-on science learning
programs directly to the classrooms, libraries, and community-based organizations.
ASC respectfully requests $75,000 from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to support
the delivery of Hands-On Science Discovery Programming for Low-Income Youth in Title I schools in
Maricopa County. The proposed program, which will be offered at no cost to participating school
children and teachers, will feature field trips to the Center (Focused Field Trips), educator training
for teachers accompanying their students on field trips, outreach workshops delivered directly to
classrooms (Science on Wheels), and standards-based, curriculum-enhancing resources that will
better prepare teachers to deliver informal, extracurricular science programs. These programs fill a
unique niche by combining formal, professional development opportunities for teachers with
engaging, hands-on science learning opportunities for their students. The end result is more
meaningful and impactful experiences for students and teachers alike.
Due to the uncertainty of the coming year, ASC is fully equipped and prepared to deliver
comprehensive STEM education programming via a virtual platform, if needed. Based on each
school’s needs, Science on Wheels and Focused Field Trips programs can be taught via an online
platform of the school’s choice. ASC will work with each class to provide STEM activity kits in
advance for distribution to students prior to any virtual programs. In addition, teachers can receive
online professional development training and coaching on how to teach STEM virtually and
effectively, along with comprehensive lesson plans.
During the grant term, the programs outlined will serve approximately 6,800 low-income youth in
grades preK-8, providing them valuable opportunities to learn about STEM through meaningful,
immersive educational experiences.
Support from Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community's 12% Gaming Grant Funds will
underwrite program staffing, supplies, transportation and other services required to provide, on a
complimentary basis:

Science on Wheels outreach programs or the equivalent, for an estimated 2,800 youth in
grades preK-8.
•
Focused Field Trip experiences for an estimated 4,000 youth in grades K-8.
•
Pre-field trip orientation workshops for teachers.
ASC has a successful history of providing enriching interactive experiences, exhibits and programs that
incorporate cutting-edge technology and age-appropriate STEM education programs. Each summer,
ASC’s Learning team reviews all lessons, guides and programs to update as needed. In addition, based
on feedback from teachers, ASC’s Learning team develops new programs to respond to the needs of
Arizona educators. ASC operates on a balanced budget, is debt free, financially stable and has adequate
operating reserves and working capital.
ASC’s Chief Academic Officer, Beth Nickel, has over 25 years of experience as a teacher and
administrator in public education. She has led educational reform and change across the country at the
school and system level. In her role at ASC, Ms. Nickel provides opportunities for students, teachers, and
community groups across the state to engage in high quality science experiences. Ms. Nickel earned her
M. Ed. Elementary Education and completed her 6th Year Program in K-12 Administration and
Supervision at the University of Kentucky.
