Approve and authorize, by Resolution, Maricopa County by and through its Department of Correctional Health Services (MCDCHS), to process a non-financial Outpatient Sample Program (OSP) form (ONRHA052A 32176004) with Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc., for free samples of ABILIFY MAINTENA (APRIPIPRAZOLE) for extended-release injectable suspension. This Agreement is non-financial and is effective from June 27, 2018 until June 27, 2023. Board Required Information: Long acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotic medications are used frequently in the community for psychiatric conditions, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder. Given the large number of jail inmates with psychiatric conditions who get treated with LAI medications in the community, best practices dictate that these medications be continued in jail for patients who are stable and compliant on LAls. The cost of LAls is significant. On average, 200 patients per month are receiving injectable antipsychotic medications in Maricopa County Jails. This comprises 20% of the monthly pharmacy budget for a jail population of 7500. Fortunately, pharmaceutical companies understand the burden that LAls have on county budgets and have programs designed specifically to provide medications, free of charge, to incarcerated populations. Creating a partnership with these companies will allow for continuity of care on patients, while in jail, who are stable and compliant in the community with LAI medications. It will also allow for ‘new starts’ on patients who are good candidates (either those who have been on LAls in the past, or who may benefit from doing a trial of LAls for the first time). Additional Information: Recent medical literature indicates that adherence to antipsychotic medications may lead to a decrease in criminal recidivism.
