Jefferson, 10th Floor Phoenix, AZ 85003 BOARD OF SUPERVISORS The Board of Supervisors of Maricopa County, Phoenix, Arizona, convened in Special Session at 10:50 AM or immediately following the Formal meeting on Wednesday, January 08, 2020, in the Supervisors’ Auditorium, 205 W. Jefferson, Phoenix, AZ 85003, with the following members present: Clint Hickman, Chairman, District 4; Jack Sellers, Vice Chairman, District 1; Steve Chucri, District 2; Bill Gates, District 3; Steve Gallardo, District 5. Also present: Fran McCarroll, Clerk of the Board; Maria Ceaglske, Minutes Coordinator; Joy Rich, County Manager; and Andrea Cummings, Legal Counsel. 1. EXECUTIVE SESSION Vote to convene in Executive Session to consider the items on the Special Executive Agenda dated January 08, 2020, for Board of Supervisors and relevant Special Districts pursuant to the statutory authority listed for each item. No action was taken on this item. OPEN SESSION 2. CONSIDERATION OF ACTION RELATING TO POWERS AND DUTIES OF THE BOARD RELATED TO THE COUNTY ASSESSOR. Chairman Hickman noted the County Assessor proceedings have been a difficult time for the Board and County staff. He spoke of the importance of Supervisor Gates navigating the Board through the process with his legal background. It has been a slow process that has shown the character of the Board and leadership of Supervisor Gates. He will continue to look to Supervisor Gates to get through the remainder of the process. After the Board takes action on this particular item, the Board will start discussing a process to fill the County Assessor’s position. Special Meeting Minutes Wednesday, January 08, 2020 Page 2 of 2 Supervisor Gates thanked Chairman Hickman for the kind comments and noted the reality is that the Board has worked together throughout the process. He spoke of the December 27, 2019 meeting where the Board took action to sustain the suspension of Mr. Petersen. The Board also took action to follow up with a written opinion regarding the Board’s decision to sustain the suspension and to refer the issue for removal proceedings to Allister Adel, County Attorney. On January 7, 2020 Mr. Petersen submitted his resignation as County Assessor. Due to the resignation submittal a written opinion and removal proceedings are no longer necessary. Supervisor Gallardo thanked Bill Wiley, Interim County Assessor, for his assistance and noted he had done a great job.
