When these infections occur among vaccinated people, they tend to be mild. • If you are fully vaccinated and become infected with the Delta variant, you can spread the virus to others. • People with weakened immune systems, including people who take immunosuppressive medications, may not be protected even if fully vaccinated. Vaccine Recommendations • Everyone ages 5 and older should get a COVID-19 vaccine 11/12/2021 13 Boosters 11/12/2021 14 Vaccines in Maricopa County Vaccine doses administered 11/12/2021 16 Percent of population vaccinated 11/12/2021 17 Vaccination status by age group 11/12/2021 18 Vaccine events for 5+ since Nov 6th rollout • Partnered, hosted or promoted 28 community events – Events scheduled almost daily with 5-10 events on Saturdays – Pharmacies have partnered with providers to vaccinate their patients • This doesn’t include 124 providers who ordered vaccine – One provider vaccinated 4100 kids with 4k more scheduled this week • We estimate at least 10,000 vaccines have been administered, although the data are not yet available in ASIIS 11/12/2021 19 Natural Immunity vs. Vaccine Immunity • COVID-19 vaccines provide more effective and longer- lasting immunity than natural immunity from infection • 1/3 of COVID-19 infections result in zero protective antibodies • Those with mild or no symptoms generate fewer antibodies • Natural immunity fades faster than vaccine immunity • 65% of people with low antibodies at time of infection completely lost their COVID-19 antibodies by 60 days • Natural immunity alone is less than half as effective than natural immunity plus vaccination • Unvaccinated people are >twice as likely to get COVID-19 again https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/27/9/21-1042_article https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6947a2.htm https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7032e1.htm https://www.nebraskamed.com/COVID/covid-19-studies-natural- immunity-versus-vaccination Looking Ahead Concerns • We are seeing over 1800 new cases per day • School outbreaks are increasing rapidly • Many schools held homecoming events without masks • Holiday season has begun • Flu season has yet to begin • Hospitals are struggling to find staff 11/12/2021 22 Holiday Season • The best way to minimize COVID-19 risk and keep your family and friends safer is to get vaccinated if you’re eligible • Protect those not yet eligible for vaccination such as young children by getting yourself and other eligible people around them vaccinated. • Wear well-fitting masks over your nose and mouth if you are in public indoor settings if you are not fully vaccinated. • Even those who are fully vaccinated should wear a mask in public indoor settings in communities with substantial to high transmission. • Outdoors is safer than indoors. • Avoid crowded, poorly ventilated spaces. • If you are sick or have symptoms, don’t host or attend a gathering. • Get tested if you have symptoms of COVID-19 or have a close contact with someone who has COVID-19. 11/12/2021 23 Goals • Decrease community transmission to moderate or low level • Increase % of residents ages 5+ who have received a vaccine to 70% 11/12/2021 24 GOAL 70% 54.2% Questions/Discussion
