On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the thousands of students and teachers we serve at Arizona
Science Center, I want to personally thank you and Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community for
your continued partnership and generous support.
This past year has been especially challenging for everyone, including the countless number of children
and families who have adapted to new learning environments and new ways to learn as schools were
closed. Because of your support, we’ve been able to help children stay engaged and excited about
learning while also providing guidance and valuable resources for their teachers through programs
including Science on Wheels and Focused Field Trips.
We are grateful for the invitation to submit a proposal for the calendar year 2022 grant program. As
requested, the completed application with accompanying documents are included for the SRPMIC
Committee’s review.

About the Grant Program Application:
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community 12% Gaming Grant Program (“Program”) application
will serve to provide a comprehensive review of the programming requests for Arizona cities, towns,
counties, non-municipal public service organizations, and non-profit organizations selected to apply for
grant funding. It is not the intent of the Program to award grants that would benefit individuals, be used
as sponsorships, be used for religious activities, primarily fund the indirect or administrative costs of a
program/organization, or be used for the direct benefit of the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian
Community.

The mission of Arizona Science Center (ASC) is to inspire, educate and engage curious minds through
science. First conceived in 1980 as a pilot science center by the Junior League of Phoenix, ASC officially
opened its doors in 1984 in a modest space within the Downtown Phoenix Hyatt Hotel. In that first year,
ASC saw more than 87,000 guests. Today, ASC attracts more than 500,000 visitors every year who learn
about science through 300+ hands-on exhibits, interactive galleries, live demonstrations, traveling
exhibitions, Giant Screen Theater and Planetarium presentations, special lectures and events, and more.
In addition, providing high-quality, hands-on STEM education for all of Arizona’s children is a major
driver behind ASC’s work and programs. As a leading education partner and resource to schools, school
districts, community centers, and other nonprofit organizations, ASC delivers essential STEM
programming to more than 200,000 PreK-8th grade students each year through programs such as
Focused Field Trips, Science on Wheels, Girls in STEM, Camp Innovation, CREATE programs, and more.
In addition to serving hundreds of thousands of students each year, ASC supports Arizona’s teachers
through our Freeport-McMoRan Foundation Center for Leadership in Learning. Providing an extensive
range of professional development workshops, boot camps, conferences, coaching, and courses
including our Science Teacher Residency Program (STaR). ASC equips teachers with new tools and
training, building their competence and confidence in teaching STEM effectively for student success. Our
professional development programs benefit more than 5,000 teachers every year.
Our education programs reach and impact students, teachers and families throughout the state of
Arizona, and are especially needed and valuable in rural communities where STEM learning resources
and opportunities are rare.
Among the 200,000 students we annually serve with STEM education programming, more than half are
from Title I schools in low-income communities where at least 40%, and often 80% or more qualify for
the National School Lunch Program. Reaching and impacting these vulnerable populations at reduced or
no cost is a top priority, and is only made possible through generous support from individual donors,
and corporate and foundation partners. Through our work, mission and programs, we are committed to
breaking down the barriers to high-quality STEM education, and providing ample learning opportunities
and support so that all children, regardless of their background, can tap into their full potential.
Over the past year, despite the challenges of COVID-19, ASC was able to provide exceptional
experiences for visitors with new exhibits, exhibitions, film presentations, virtual lectures, and special
family events. In addition, we continued to serve and impact countless numbers of students, teachers
and families through our virtual and in-person STEM education programs, including our first virtual
Arizona Science & Engineering Fair (AzSEF) and our new CONNECT offering which has benefitted nearly
30,000 people to date.
As of March 2021, we have begun to transition back to in-person programs including school field trips,
outreach programs in schools and community centers, and teacher professional development
workshops.

Project Name: Arizona Science Center’s Hands-On Science Discovery Programming for Low-Income
Youth
Provide a brief description of the project being submitted to the 12% SRPMIC Grant program. In the
description provide a summary of the relevant experience, administrative activity, and program
development related to the grant request.
For years, severe budget cuts, widespread teacher shortages, chronic turnover and other challenges
have hampered the ability for Arizona’s children to have a solid educational foundation and all they
need to succeed. With packed classrooms, meager supplies, outdated equipment, and increasing time
pressures, teachers have struggled to equip their students with the level of proficiency needed to
advance and truly succeed. Moreover, despite the importance of science, technology, engineering and
math (STEM) in today’s careers, most Arizona teachers aren’t given enough time to dedicate to STEM.
Many don’t have funding to provide robust STEM programs, and too few have a background in STEM
and the ability to teach it well.
This ongoing struggle was only made worse by the onset of COVID-19. As schools closed, teachers
scrambled to transition their curriculum online, and to quickly adapt to virtual teaching platforms,
students struggled to adapt to the new virtual classroom, along with learning from home, and parents
were forced to juggle work while trying to support their children’s new learning environment.
Now as students have been returning to the classroom, helping them to reengage with exciting,
collaborative learning experiences is more important than ever. ASC’s Hands-On Science Discovery
Programming for Low-Income Youth will provide these experiences and more for thousands of children
from Title I schools at no cost.
Through a dynamic combination of ASC’s Focused Field Trips and Science on Wheels programs, (offered
both in-person and virtually), children can learn about STEM by using all of their senses in interactive
and meaningful ways that help strengthen their classroom curriculum.
On a Focused Field Trip, students and teachers from Arizona Title I schools are able to visit ASC at no
cost, and experience STEM through four floors of interactive galleries, 300+ hands-on exhibits, live
demonstrations and more. Each Focused Field Trip consists of 30-40 students with 2-5 teachers and
chaperones, with the field trip lasting 4-5 hours. This allows enough time for students to explore the
Center and cover the specific areas to support classroom study. Teachers may also add on extra
experiences including traveling exhibitions and presentations in the Giant Screen Theater and Dorrance
Planetarium.
Prior to each field trip, participating teachers attend a two-hour professional development workshop
held at ASC. Offered twice per month, workshops help familiarize teachers with ASC and its many
galleries, and structure their field trip to best support what’s being taught in the classroom. Teachers are
given Gallery Guides that detail the specific STEM lessons and grade level science standards showcased
in each gallery, and after the workshop, online surveys are sent for feedback on their experience and
suggestions for improvements. In a typical year, more than 100,000 students visit ASC on an educational
field trip, with nearly 50,000 coming from Title I schools who participate for free thanks to charitable
support.
Science on Wheels brings ASC’s expertise and resources directly to classrooms and communities across
Arizona. Led by ASC’s Learning Team, Science on Wheels offers more than 80 STEM lessons in a variety
of formats that teachers can choose from. Through hands-on activities in programs such as Zombie MD
and Power of a Drop, students learn about and explore how epidemics (and pandemics) are spread and
identified, and how cities are designed around water resources. With compelling, live demonstrations
and exciting challenges, the program not only helps students learn essential STEM concepts, but also
helps them practice strategic thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration, while providing added
support and modeling best teaching practices for teachers.
In a typical year, nearly 60,000 students throughout Arizona participate in and benefit from Science on
Wheels programs. This includes 20,000 from Title I schools with low-income, high-minority populations
who participate at no cost thanks to charitable support. Science on Wheels is especially valuable for
schools in rural communities where traveling to the Center would be difficult.
ASC’s Learning Team plans, implements, and manages Science on Wheels programs. The team is led by
Alyson Smith, Senior Vice President of Engagement. Alyson has led the Center’s STEM education
programs for 8 years, and her professional background includes over 10 years in education as a teacher
for K-12 students, with a focus on STEM. Our Learning & Engagement Specialists plan and deliver each
Science on Wheels program, and each holds and/or are pursuing advanced degrees in Science and/or
Education.
ASC respectfully requests $50,000 from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to support the
delivery of Hands-On Science Discovery Programming for Low-Income Youth in Title I schools in
Maricopa County. The proposed program, offered at no cost to participating children and teachers, will
include educational field trips to the Center (Focused Field Trips), pre-field trip orientation workshops for
teachers, 80+ STEM programs led directly in classrooms (Science on Wheels), along with additional
resources to help teachers teach STEM more confidently and effectively. ASC is fully equipped to deliver
these programs as needed in a virtual format if desired by the requesting teacher or school as well.
During the grant term, the programs outlined will serve approximately 3,900 low-income youth in
grades preK-8, providing them valuable opportunities to learn about STEM through meaningful,
immersive educational experiences.
Support from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community's 12% Gaming Grant Program will
underwrite program staffing, supplies, transportation and other services required to provide, on a
complimentary basis:

Science on Wheels outreach programs for an estimated 900 youth in grades preK-8.
•
Focused Field Trips for an estimated 3,000 youth in grades K-8.
•
Pre-field trip orientation workshops for teachers.
