Overdose Awareness Day 
 
August 31, 2025 
 
WHEREAS, Overdose Awareness Day is internationally recognized on August 31 of each year 
to raise awareness of drug overdoses, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths and acknowledge 
the grief felt by families and friends by remembering those who have died or had a permanent 
injury as a result of a drug overdose; and 
 
WHEREAS, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there 
were approximately 107,941 drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2022, and although 
preliminary figures for 2023 indicate a slight decline, overdose remains a leading public health 
crisis; and 
 
WHEREAS, overdose is the leading cause of death for persons under the age of 50; and 
 
WHEREAS, it is important to recognize the signs of someone struggling with substance abuse 
as such individuals  may experience personality changes, health problems, relationship problems, 
difficulty at work and financial hardships; and 
 
WHEREAS, addiction touches people of all backgrounds; regardless of race, religion, 
education, or social class, people from all walks of life have suffered from substance abuse or 
known someone who has; and 
 
WHEREAS, those who suffer from substance use disorder are mothers, fathers, sisters, 
brothers, and friends to many, and it is up to the community to reduce the stigma, promote 
education and treatment, and support healing for all affected. 
 
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Juan F. Rodriguez, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of 
the City of Tolleson, Arizona, do hereby proclaim  August 31, 2025 as Overdose Awareness Day 
in recognition of the lives lost to overdose and in support of those working toward recovery and
