Operations 
September Call Volume 
For September, Engine 161 responded to 185 calls (6.2 calls per day), and 
Ladder/LT161 responded to a combined 137 calls (4.6 calls per day). 
 
 
Operations

o Battalion Chiefs – 2 / 1 vacant 
 New wildland pants and boots have arrived for all members. This gear was 
approved in this year’s council-adopted budget and will enhance firefighter 
safety and comfort during wildland and brush fire responses.  
 Seven new recruits began the fire academy on September 8. Structure 
firefighting gear has arrived for each recruit to support their live fire 
training evolutions.

 Battalion Chief Matt Weaver returned safely from the Katy Creek Fire 
outside Colville, Washington. He served as a Task Force Leader during the 
two-week deployment, maintaining his certifications as a Task Force 
Leader, Strike Team Leader, and Engine Boss. 
 Deputy Chief Jack Garrison and Battalion Chief Matt Weaver were the lead 
instructors for the Incident Safety Officer (ISO) class at the Arizona State 
Fire School. In addition, four members: Firefighters Quintero and Nickens, 
and Engineer Ken Fennema, attended classes including ISO, Extrication and 
Patient Stabilization, and Smoke Reading. Fire Chief Young attended the 
New Chief Seminar, a 4-day course offered annually to help new fire chiefs 
navigate their first three years of leadership.  
 EMS continuing education was conducted at the station, focusing on 
cardiac emergencies and chart reviews. 
 The new SCBA order is in progress, and fit testing for all members is being 
conducted to ensure proper mask fit and safety compliance for new masks. 
 Department members participated in Tolleson Union High School’s 
Commitment Day event held at State Farm Stadium. This event served as a 
recruitment opportunity for the department’s upcoming Fire Cadet 
Program. 
 On-duty crews served lunch at the Senior Center for the city’s Fiestas 
Patrias lunch and celebration.
