Black History Month
February 2025
WHEREAS, Black History Month is an annual observance recognizing the achievements,
contributions, and rich cultural heritage of African Americans throughout history, honoring their
struggles, triumphs, and impact on our society; and
WHEREAS, the 2025 national theme for Black History Month, "African Americans and Labor,"
highlights the pivotal role African Americans have played in shaping the labor movement,
advancing workers’ rights, and making significant contributions across industries, from
agriculture and domestic work to manufacturing, business, technology, and beyond; and
WHEREAS, despite historical barriers such as discrimination, segregation, and inequitable
labor policies, African American workers, labor leaders, and advocates have persevered to secure
fair wages, safer working conditions, and equal employment opportunities, forging a path toward
justice and economic empowerment for all; and
WHEREAS, the City of Tolleson recognizes the importance of acknowledging and addressing
systemic inequities in labor and employment, standing in solidarity with efforts to promote
workplace equity, fair labor practices, and the economic advancement of African American
workers and their communities; and
WHEREAS, the City of Tolleson encourages all residents to honor and celebrate the
contributions of African Americans in labor and industry, to engage in meaningful discussions on
racial and economic justice, and to take action in advocating for equity in all professional fields;
and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Juan F. Rodriguez, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of
the City of Tolleson, Arizona, do hereby proclaim February 2025 as Black History Month in the
City of Tolleson, urging all citizens to join in recognizing and celebrating the remarkable
contributions of African Americans in labor and the workforce, both past and present.
