20-229 CAMPAIGN SIGNS AND STATE HIGHWAY RIGHT-OF-WAY Refer to Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S.) §28-7044, A.R.S. §28-7053, and Arizona Administrative Code (AAC) R17-3-502. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is seeking cooperation regarding placement of campaign signs by candidates or those supporting their campaigns. Placement of campaign signs in the right-of-way along state highways is not allowed. RIGHT-OF-WAY DEFINED The right-of-way is the roadway itself, plus the property of either side of the highway, including interchange ramps and bridges that are owned and maintained by the State. (See photos, right) REMOVAL If ADOT district maintenance personnel remove a campaign sign from the State’s right-of-way, the sign may be retrieved from the appropriate highway maintenance yard.
