A Powerful Economic Development Tool
BNSF has more than 1,500 employees in Arizona earning a combined payroll of over $198m/year. The average railroad
salary and compensation package tops $132,000/year allowing BNSF’s workforce to earn 39% more than the average full-
time U.S. employee.
An Industry Leader in Rail Safety
At BNSF, we believe every accident or injury is preventable. We work each day to make that vision a reality through our
extensive safety programs, training and technology. In 2023, we completed a record year for workplace safety, with the
lowest injury frequency rate in our company’s 175-year history. We operated our 32,500-mile network without loss of life,
and with the fewest number of employee injuries ever.
The freight rail industry is safe and getting safer. The last decade has been the safest ever for rail. Data from the Federal
Railroad Administration (FRA) confirms the industry’s approach delivers safety improvements. The train accident rate is
down 27% since 2000 and 6% since 2022. The hazardous materials accident rate is at its lowest ever and down 75% since
2000.
BNSF is committed to transporting hazardous materials safely – 99.99% of BNSF hazmat shipments reach their destination
without a release caused by a train accident. Our rigorous approach to hazmat safety is informed by a framework of
measures focused on prevention, mitigation and response.
We ensure that we and the communities we serve are prepared to respond in the rare instance of an incident. BNSF has
over 120 trained hazmat responders at more than 50 locations across our network with prepositioned response equipment
which is supported by a network of contract emergency and environmental responders. We also provide free hazmat
response training to local first responders across our network, training more than 144,000 responders since 1996.

BNSF Railway is one of North America’s leading freight transportation
companies, operating a rail network of 32,500 route miles in 28 states
and three Canadian provinces. BNSF is one of the top transporters of
the products and materials that help feed, clothe, supply and power
communities throughout America and the world. BNSF moves those
goods more safely and efficiently, on significantly less fuel, with fewer
emissions than the all-highway alternative.
In 2024, 5.26M intermodal shipments (truck
trailers or containers) were transported on BNSF’s rail
lines instead of on the nation’s congested highways
BNSF moved 3.1M new cars and trucks in 2024,

or ~5 per minute
BNSF moves enough grain each year to supply

740M people with a year’s supply of bread
BNSF moves enough lumber each year to frame

300K houses
In 2024, BNSF hauled enough coal to power nearly
24M homes for an entire year.
