I believe the City Council should do whatever they can to insure the desert scape is left as pristine as possible and not destroyed by needless and unwanted advertisements. There are may more ways to convey the business interests thru social media than to trash the natural landscape. An approval of one business to raise billboards will only result in many other businesses raising any number of billboards. I also encourage the Council to join neighboring cities to form a consortium to ban billboards and similar advertising for the full length of 303. The material I have read shows a very limited benefit to the City and many negatives. Light pollution. Traffic distraction. Commercialization of a desert landscape. I am sure you have been down SR 101 south to Interstate 10 and back. Are the many billboards bombarding motorists and others on that stretch of freeway a model for Surprise? I hope not. Ironically, it appears the applicant is not asking for permission to put billboards on Grand Avenue, a thoroughfare replete with commercial development and signage. There is no compelling justification for the proposed code changes. Please reject them. George A. Riemer Corte Bella resident Unincorporated Maricopa County 2 P.S. The call to the public form onliine for this item does not work when I tried it. This really stifles public participation.
